I sure wouldn't wager against the success of the Edison Club. I think it will be extremely successful. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if its success generates more of the same Downtown. Look to see something of this nature included in an upcoming mixed-use tower down the road in a few years. Perhaps even sooner than later. Kind of along the line of what Ken Bretschneider was envisioning a few years back but wasn't able to pull off the financing.

I’ve been surprised on the negative reaction to this club. It has been weirdly personal and visceral on both this forum and the Reddit Page. I think the main thing is people don’t want feel left out and these type of clubs make people feel like they are too old or too poor and it looks kind of cool and bums them out. As a married, 40 year-old LDS guy, I don’t think this is for me. 12-15 years ago, when I was single and had a little bit more $ to spend on social things, I would have considered it for $150 a month.

Exactly, it’s all about perspective. Thousands of young people are coming here every year. Just wait till all these residential towers and offices are complete. The market is absolutely there. 1,500 a year to network with like-minded and successful (not always the case but still) individuals? The same people that can give you a referral to their tech company with a bigger salary? Hell, I might do it myself just for the experience.

The city needs more diversification when it comes to socializing, and this is just another way to do it.

Why I am open to the Sundial Tower:

If I didn't really know better, I could theoretically look at all these proposals and question whether they're the same building. Maybe Astra wouldn't draw that question because of its roof - but the rest? If you were to show me those renderings, I don't think I could tell you definitively what tower they were without seeing the surrounding buildings.

the edison club is just funny because the gen z branding is kinda cringe and definitely just for clicks. As a gen z, I feel like most people would rather socialize through social media tbh. Wouldn't it be difficult to network if everyone there was just a recent college grad or entry-level..? Does it feel exclusive at that price? Wouldn't those people want to spend that money on like just going to bars and restaurants?

I hope it succeeds but it seems crazy for a place like salt lake half the population here is already networking through the church and there's so many universities with good networking opportunities for recent college grads

Most humans need something more than social media and made up avatars. And there are basically no more Mormons downtown. No offense on that. Mormons are not the target demographic for the Edison house. I'll bet it does well. They have assembled a really good team. It's not for me. And it seem waaaaaay under priced.

Thanks for the pictures Blah Amazing! Downtown is really starting to fill in with all the new projects. Every time I see 95 State (love it by the way) I can't help but think what a presence it would have had if 10 stories taller. We will get there eventually but like many I'm really itching to see a 600+ tower in Salt Lake. I honestly don't think 500 would be enough to transform the skyline, depending on location of course. With the glass thats going up on the CCH I think it's going to be very attractive. Yes it's wide but it's really starting to make an impact on W Temple.

New photos and details on the Sundial tower from a Hines luncheon recording I found on LinkedIn.

Notes on Theater Tower:
  • Being rebranded from "Main Street Apartments" to "150 S Main"
  • Another year of design work to go, then two years of construction
  • Confirmed that they are working on incorporating the Tiffany skylight into the new building.
  • No new renderings except maybe this one showing more of the midblock walkway than before

Notes on Sundial Tower:
  • "Trophy" office tower
  • Pickard Chilton was inspired by Sundial Peak, wants to "bring the outdoors inside"
  • Lead architect is Tony Markese
  • Meant to look like a different building from every angle
  • 8-story parking garage
  • "Very efficient"
  • 9th floor amenity space, 19th floor private patio space
  • Aiming for 2024, they have the ground lease. The other lot on the corner will be residential and is being developed by PEG.

Ok nvm I kinda love the Sundial Tower now after seeing this. I mean its wide but it's super unique and will bring some serious architectural diversity to the city.

Those renderings are a lot better than the previous ones. I still think it would be greatly improved with more height, but maybe there is hope that I'll like it.

I don't think I'll really make up my mind about it until it's done.

I think it looks a lot better from the east than Orlando's initial massing. There's definitely more going on on that side than we assumed. It's still a whale from the north/south and it's going to really impact those views of the skyline. The chamfers will make it interesting from those views though. I really dig the street frontage on Main and the mid-block walkway.

I will say that the amount of parking is a little egregious and definitely detracts from the design, especially given its location on the TRAX stop.

The parking is egregious. If they're insistent on including that much parking, at least move it behind the street frontage.

My goodness, this building's design is definitely in flux. SLC has developed some very cool designs with its public buildings such as the Library, the Safety Headquarters, the Rio Tinto, etc. I think it's great they're finally pushing the boundaries on a tower. I hope this leads to a few more iconic tower designs, some even much taller.

Yeah which is why I'm going to hold out on ultimate judgement. I recognize that there's still a chance that some things could change. Honestly if they just gave it a crown of some sort, I think I would like it a whole lot more. I'm not saying unique designs are bad by any means, I'm just not fond of this particular design. But I'm open to my mind changing as time goes on.

Given how quickly these updates turned around we most likely haven't seen the last of the design changes. I must say it's kind of exciting to anticipate what they might come up with next. I definitely like the direction they're heading. My only little picky suggestion at this point would be that the opportunity is taken to dress up that ugly existing parking terrace facing Main. Even though it's set back in a way it still could use a good dose of public art to attractively disguise it. That space to the left of the Sundial should be used as an attractive little pocket plaza.

What design changes are we talking about? The new Sundial renderings have the same design as the one from a few days ago. In fact, they showed that one alongside these new ones.

The building just looks completely different from different angles, which is actually pretty cool.
