FWIW it's Montreal-area mayors being difficult towards Energy East; not Quebecers as a whole.

True. However these mayors represent nearly half the provinces population.

Don't get me started. This is a national project and it should reduce the risk and cost substantially. Not to mention being able to add value to our Canadian resource products.

There are over 15K supporters already. That is great. Every vote will help.

Can Energy East Save Us?

I have a sinking feeling its too late for a few hundred jobs to turn this ship around. I hope I'm wrong.

CTV

"The provincial government has been actively promoting the proposed Energy East pipeline as a way to generate revenue, thousands of jobs during construction and over 300 permanent positions."

The size of Saint John’s apartment rental universe has been trending lower since 2000 despite a modest number of new privately-initiated rental apartment units being completed each year. Specifically, the universe has declined from 10,935 units in October 2000 to 8,741 units in October 2015. The smaller universe reflects the poor quality of the rental housing stock where several structures have either been demolished or abandoned. Despite the continual reduction in the rental universe, vacancy rates remain elevated. A steadily declining population, weak employment growth, outmigration, and above average poverty levels are the primary reasons for the elevated vacancy rates

A couple of thoughts. While I do not think energy east is the saviour of Saint John I do believe it will be a part of a revival of sorts. I believe that there is still talk of a refinery expansion....maybe a Coker? If and when the pipe arrives. This, with few other projects on the go.....deep water terminal, expansion of tourist attractions, new IO HQ consolidating everyone uptown and JDI hiring thousands over the next few years. I'm not naive, I understand a lot of things also have to happen but I am optimistic. Regarding the apartments it is a disgrace....third world quality in many of these places....I know a few developers who can't keep up with the demand for their units....mid to high end. Let's keep poking along and hoping!

NB Liquor staff at the Prince Edward Square location seemed pretty positive that the new uptown store will be at Wellington and Union Streets. They said that they had been told that they will be moving in October. They said the new store was going to be identical to the new store out East - so perhaps with a growler filling station?

I found these pictures of the final product (I assume the bottom one is more recent):

Invites went out yesterday for an Irving Oil event next Wednesday that will show the design for their new HQ on King Square. The invite shows a tiny bit of the rendering, showing at least several (4-5) stories in the sky, with no signs of the bottom so it's likely going to be quite tall

There's a tent going up on the proposed site - Guessing that's where the reveal of the design will take place.

Is there enough in the picture to tell if its a modern style of high rise? I am hearing from sources anywhere between 9 and 13 stories. Considering its location, it will definitely have an impact on the skyline!

It's definitely an older style IMO, very much looking like they want to blend in with the Admiral Beatty, which will probably help it sail through public support in the community

The picture is very vague. Just bland concrete & windows. I'm hoping it's just a generic photo and the actual building reveal will show a great design and interesting details. Either way we will know soon enough.

Is there a link to this rendering?

Even if the new IOL building is only 2-3 stories higher than the Admiral Beatty (which I believe is 8 floors), it should hold a prominent spot in the skyline - I think that area is the highest point on the peninsula.

It will be quite a sight.....the highest point is actually Princess and Wentworth I believe...about 2 blocks to the east. Can't wait to see the specs! Is it invite only or can the general public attend?

Apparently the morning is invite only and the public can attend from 1-5. Can't wait to see the unveiling!

Judging from the upwards angle from the observers point of view, I'd say the building must be 30 stories tall......

One can only hope.

In any event, only one more sleep to go before the big reveal.
