Why would anyone want to breath more pollution and see more carbon emissions just because oil prices fell?

All one has to do is think about the subject for a moment or two to realize that there are particular reasons why the taxes are fixed where they are. Unless you'd like to be paying a lot more in taxes when the price of gas is back to normal? Yeah, I didn't think so.

It's not "50%" though.

That's like me saying I spent $2 on a bottle of pop but $8 on a sandwich one day, and then $2 on a bottle of pop and only $5 on a sandwich the next day, so now the bottle of pop is too expensive.

The taxes are fixed at cents per litre for a reason. They should be insulated to protect that funding source for transit and infrastructure against an inelastic commodity that itself does not have a fixed cost to consumers. As GeeCee said, 50% tax would mean $2/litre gas has $1 in taxes, which, naturally, people would lose their minds over.

Unless, of course, you want to pay more property tax, in which case I'd be happy to have that discussion.

Gas taxes are good.

That sounds like you've got a great idea. I think you should visit those provinces, and tell them your idea. Maybe start with Alberta - but not this weekend, they don't want you driving there.

Largely happened with Carbon Taxes being introduced. When Alberta launched its Carbon Tax, a good segment of it went to transit into a program that started in 2008 and ended in 2016 but it was based on grants and not a reliable, consistent and predictable source of monies that municipalities could reliably plan / forecast on, as well as the "City Charter" (much like how Vancouver is treated in BC), but all that was scrapped recently.

What's interesting is that the BC referendum on more dedicated transit funding failed, and yet TransLink takes (roughly speaking) over $1,000 per new unit of apartment housing built. So in truth, you could lower the gas tax, and raise it elsewhere to maintain or increase funding to expand transit. Or, like in Alberta, just de-fund it regularly and have usage drop year after year.

Passing through Chilliwack today, Petro-Canada at Young Road was selling Regular at 79.9. Did not see it cheaper anywhere else between Arbutus Ridge and Kamloops.

The price of oil keeps going down but the price at the pump isn't following. Pcan was 99.9 this morning at KG and 96th.

Edmonton 57.9 and dropping..

That's what happens when refining costs and taxes are fixed. Only the variable costs go down

It's doing that thing again where the prices are weird.

Tri-cities are varying between 79.9 and 85.9. Kamloops is 94.9 (edited: We're now $1.059) and for some reason chunks of the Okanagan are between 95.9 and $1.069

News is still saying it's increased demand.

I'd like to know what the hell is up with that one Fas Gas on 108th in Surrey that has kept the price pinned at 132.9.

It's likely supply and demand becoming more in balance. Refineries have cut way back on production to match the reduced demand and it's now reflected in pump prices.

I mean, that makes sense but normally it's the lower mainland that gets shafted first before we feel it.

Because any increase/decrease is multiplied by multiple taxes.

Wrong. The only tax that isn't constant is GST, and that applies across the country. Every other single tax on gas is a fixed rate.
