I'm going to guess that my 2 year old will have her license before this is done...
The drawings in the minutes from council pretty much match all preliminary drawings of this interchange that I have seen. This roadway has been planned for sooo long. I have seen drawings dating back to the late 70s and early 80s. I'm surprised they haven't tried to make it a roundabout.

The land that is currently being converted into an overpass on Topsail Road has been reserved for this road since then. It is crazy... I mean this roadway has been in development stages for nearly 40 years if those dates are correct.

I suppose it will take another 40 years to get the asphalt on it...

The progress this summer has been abysmal to say the least.
Construction season all but over. The media should ask Hawkins about his
claim of driving on it this fall, but alas it doesn't seem to be a big juicy item for the press.

Years and years of ineptitude or incompetence or whatever you may name it, amongst various governments in NL,
have desensitized the populace against protesting the sluggish pace of these projects. It's not just TGH.

We all just accept that's how long it takes to get something built here.

When they say we have a short construction season, I take it they mean September and October. I've seen more road construction in these 2 months than I have all spring and summer. Where have they been hiding? The work I've seen being done in June, July and August has been minimal.

The second roundabout at Ruth/Pitts Memorial/Galway has started and will supposedly take 10 weeks to complete.....taking us close to Christmas. So they say anyway.

Exactly, you hardly see a thing all summer and now it seems there's more road construction than June, July & August combined. The nighttime TCH project is great, but if they'd done it in August they could have had more daylight on their side. The Pitts Memorial Water St. overpass would have been a good nighttime project as well.

Overnight Paving Underway, But Drivers Attempt To Plow Through

I see we are well on our way to potentially losing this service in the future.... . What a bunch of smart drivers we have!

Source: VOCM News
Date: Oct 6, 2017

The minister of transportation included VOCM News on a recent tour of overnight paving work underway on the Trans Canada Highway, just outside St. John’s.

Steve Crocker was dismayed to find several drivers helping themselves to an all-access cruise through the detoured area during last night’s inside look. He says people who ignore the temporary changes, may face legal action.

I noticed today that resurfacing is underway on TGH between ORR and Kenmount. Well needed, that road was atrocious to drive on.

Goulds Bypass

Some long overdue repairs happening now on the Goulds Bypass south of Doyles Road. Several bridges have been resurfaced & the approaches to them on both sides have been scratched - waiting on the patch.

Work is also taking place on the portion of the road between the Ruby Line & Pitts Memorial Dr.

These areas have been in terrible shape for several years - great to see them finally get repaired - just hope it stands up to the weather & traffic .

Blackmarsh Roundabout

Heavy equipment today digging out a huge section of what will presumably be the roundabout on Blackmarsh @ Redmonds. Looks like they need to remove a bunch of boggy ground to get some fill in there.

Mayor speaks on Traffic snarls

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfou...work-1.4363555

So .. the big question is, why did all parties wait until October to tear up every road in the city?

I know it's subjective, but to me this year seems worse than others. I went for a drive during the week and could not avoid a traffic tie up in any sector of St. John's or Mount Pearl!

I always wondered why they couldn't just require road construction hours to be from 9am-3:30pm. That would avoid the bulk of the traffic...probably less hassle for workers and drivers.

The temperature swing this week is about 20 degrees, which I'm sure will make a lot of this road repair moot.

Had a tour around TGH prep work yesterday. I could see that the concrete pads for streetlights in the Old Pennywell Rd. area appear ready - next step would be installing lights I assume?

Also noted they've done some excavation on the connector from the TGH to Old Pennywell Rd.

Definitely looks like roundabout construction at Blackmarsh/Redmonds Rd.

Observed some decent progress (relatively speaking ) on the Topsail Rd. overpass approaches on both sides.

Had a few pics that I'd intended to post, but apparently it's beyond my technical capability.

Thanks for the update, Offshore. It'd be great to see some of the progress pics.

I use tinypic.com; you can upload your pictures and resize them for message boards. Copy the uploaded pic's URL and paste into the "insert image" button above.

It may sound like a lot of technobabble but I assure you it's pretty straightforward. One downside of tinypic are the copious amount of ads. If you can look past that it's pretty good. Good luck!

Tgh

TGH from Old Pennywell Road Overpass looking South

TGH from Old Pennywell Road Overpass looking North

Future TGH Connector to Old Pennywell Road

As can be seen from the pics this highway has a LONG way to go to completion.

Thanks to statbass for the TinyPic tip.

I've wanted to post photos for a while now and this made it really simple. I'm no SignalHillHiker though .

Great shots nevertheless!

I've looked around the Pennywell underpass as well. I was trying to figure out how they are going to level the road and keep the bypass in place?

Looks like leveling with fill to meet the bridge ends, will extend far beyond the bypass that was created. Especially on the East side.
Almost like it's an afterthought. Another bypass maybe?

Finally some visible progress for this year...imagine if work had started in April instead of August.
Re: the Topsail Rd overpass, it appears as if they are forming precast bridge spans in behind to the east of Mt Pearl Square. If that is the case then it should make for a faster assembly of the finished product, not like the "frame and pour" method used on the other overpasses.
