Ya Superking smells like rotting fish. I think they've had some mold problems so it's beyond me how they are passing health inspections. I've also seen employees mess with the produce on the store floor such as taking rotting strawberries out of a crate and mixing it with another crate to keep it sell-able.

I guess it's a good place to buy dry/packaged groceries if you can plug your nose.

I'd recommend United - that store kept clean and smells better. You also don't have to deal with the Loblaws banner T&T has over it.

Downtown London's office space is never going to get fully filled. This was an issue prior to the pandemic and the move to WFH has only accelerated the empty space. Unfortunately some of the social issues downtown also make it a less appealing location.

Office vacancy is much lower in London's suburbs, and I know some employers have vacated downtown in favour of suburban offices since the pandemic. As an example a friend of mine used to work downtown for a large employer but his company's London office relocated to West5 about a year ago. Which is unfortunate because public transit to that part of London is almost nonexistent and now pretty much requires everyone to drive, but from what I've heard the staff are overall happy with the move. In my friend's case his commute time has been cut in half.

I've been into downtown London a couple of times this year and it just feels so...dead. I went into Citi Plaza and was shocked at the vacancy. And I lived in London in the days Eaton's closed down and Galleria was rapidly losing tenants, but it wasn't this bad. The only thing to even eat in the food court now is Subway. Both times I was downtown there was someone walking around yelling at themselves or at others.

Got to check out T&T tonight and I can confirm that it is really nice. Was very busy when we went but I suspect it will die down eventually once the newness wears off. There is a massive amount of selection (much moreso than Food Island or Superking) and prices were pretty much what I expected - a bit of a premium compared to either of the above mentioned international grocers, but not too much higher. Lots of products that I had seen before in combination with lots of T&T in-house products that I am looking forward to trying. There is a hot/ready-made food section in the back that has a self-serve hot food buffet bar (fill up a container of food and pay by weight at checkout), a dim sum order counter, as well as refrigerated sushi, onigiri rolls, and other ready-made dishes. There was also a pastry counter in the same section with fresh cakes, pastries, and other desserts. There is also a large Chinese/Korean/Japanese beauty products section that my fiancée very much enjoyed.

We are going to have to go back and check it out when it’s not so busy, but I like what I see so far despite the brand being owned by Loblaws. I also didn’t know this, but they are apparently opening locations on the US west coast now too which is kind of interesting and surprising.

I was in the Wonderland commercial area south of Southdale this afternoon and noticed a new Healthy Planet in the plaza beside Visions Electronics. Also noticed the unit next door was vacant. Am I misremembering that this was a new Rooms + Spaces store, or did that never happen? Is it closed already?

It never ended up opening - for whatever reason.

Yeah, I saw a thread on Red Flag Deals mentioning them mostly closing late last winter, so if any did open, they didn't last long.

That would be sad but not surprising either. The plant is a shell of it's former self, like a lot of of other plants in the area. Probably pushed 1000 people at it's peak, down to under 200 now. The union signed a contract there maybe 10-15 years ago that they expected to be a closing contract, so really, they managed to milk that much more time out of it. I hope someone comes along and buys it up to keep it operating rather than buying the customers and merging the ops into another location.

Pretty crummy salaries compared to the US. (Not unique to London, this is Canada-wide in that industry)

Globe and Mail article on the "Landlord"

"And in 2023, London city staff put together a report studying the numbers and proposed strategies to improve it. The report pointed out that, of the more than one million square feet of empty commercial space in the city at the time, 59 per cent was held by one owner."

Maybe paywalled so worth looking for the archived version elsewhere.
