looks like old shaker square is getting some much needed love and redevelopment attention —

Shaker Square’s rescuers ready to pivot from urgent repairs to pursuing new vision for a Cleveland landmark

Feb. 16, 2024
By Steven Litt, cleveland.com

The work so far has included replacing flat roofs that account for 85% of the total roof area at the square and replacing 60 of the 120 rooftop heating, ventilating and cooling units. Contractors have replaced some of the square’s rotting woodwork and will continue that work this spring and summer. They’ve fixed a nasty sewage backup, doubled the intensity of street lighting, and repaved the square’s two large parking lots.

...

CNP and BBC, working with the city and a 15-member neighborhood steering committee, have chosen the Boston-based firm of Agency Landscape + Planning to lead a new, nine-month, $250,000 planning effort for the square. Details on dates of meetings and events will be forthcoming at ShakerSquare.com.

...

The vacant, 2.1-acre “Bonwit Teller” shopping strip, built along Van Aken Boulevard behind the square’s southeast side in 1939-40, appears to be headed for demolition this year. Clearing the site would remove an eyesore and open a path toward redevelopment, possibly with new apartments.

interesting — tackling the old school parking bugaboo —

How Cleveland Built a City Devoted to Parking—and How It’s Trying to Undo the Damage and Win Over Skeptics

But where will I park?

By Mark Oprea on Wed, Feb 14, 2024

The suite of new laws will eliminate parking minimums within a quarter-mile radius of major transit corridors, like Detroit and Lorain Avenues in Ohio City. (Most of Ohio City in general will be covered.) And, in lieu of minimums, developers would be influenced instead by a new transit-demand management scorecard for build outs: ten points for “parking supply reduction”; six points for running a shuttle service; eight points for handing out complimentary RTA passes to residents.

“Look, all we've done is say that through policy, that building for the car first and foremost is no longer going to be a requirement,” Matt Moss, a City of Cleveland planner said. “It used to be the law that you had to do that. And all we've done is say it's no longer the requirement. Instead, we're working on incentivizing people to build more walkable, transit-oriented buildings and spaces.”

Home of Cleveland icon Jesse Owens headed for landmark designation
Published: Mar. 14, 2024, 5:04 p.m.

By Courtney Astolfi, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland is moving forward with a landmark designation for the East 100th Street home of Olympic Gold medalist Jesse Owens.

City Council is considering legislation in the coming weeks that will advance the nomination already approved by the Cleveland Landmarks Commission late last year.

The Black Cleveland icon clinched four Gold medals in track and field at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, humiliating Adolf Hitler on the world stage, and dispelling his theories of white supremacy.

In Cleveland, mushrooms digest entire houses: How fungi can be used to clean up pollution

By Nick Hilden

In the struggle to combat pollution and fight climate change, a growing number of scientists are beginning to look to one of nature’s oldest biotechnologies: fungi.
The city of Cleveland faces an epidemic of abandoned houses. Crumbling homes number in the thousands. These ramshackle structures are riddled with toxins like lead and dilapidated to the point of no return. And if tearing down and safely disposing of the waste of one such home sounds daunting, imagine thousands of them.

cavs announce development of a new mega practice facility downtown —

Cleveland Cavaliers unveil design for new practice facility

Associated Press
Mar 26, 2024

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers are stepping up their off-court game.

The NBA franchise unveiled renderings on Tuesday for a new world-class practice and high-tech training facility for the Cavs and public use in downtown that will further develop unused land on the Cuyahoga River and perhaps help lure free agents to Cleveland.

Pending approval from the city's planning commission, the team is hoping to break ground on the 210,000-square-foot Cleveland Clinic Global Peak Performance Center later this year and open by 2027.

The complex is being privately funded by Cavs chairman Dan Gilbert in partnership with the Cleveland Clinic. Gilbert initially envisioned using the acreage along the river for the second phase of a casino project that never came to fruition.
