Would be great if they also build a streetcar from downtown to get over there.

Agreed!!! This would be one of the more amazing projects of the city. It would be AWESOME for the city to have this same type of thought from Ga. State to take over/embrace the entire Underground Atlanta.

It is great to see that there are some visionaries around. 100% backing for this effort! This could be a real encouragement for the downtown area.

Georgia State has already done so much good downtown... this would be a phenomenal use for the area and a huge benefit for both the city and the university. I work in a GSU owned building (25 Park Place... the old SunTrust Plaza) and I love all the real estate they've bought and fixed up in town.

Check out the Streetcar/Beltline implementation plan. Phase one extends the currrent street car to the beltline, but Phase 2 has a leg that goes down Capital Ave, turns left on Georgia Ave. and terminates at Grant Park. Pretty sweet connectivity for this development!

Atlanta-based real estate developer Carter and Georgia State University on Wednesday teamed on a proposal for a $300 million redevelopment of the property around Turner Field for multiple uses, including football and baseball stadiums, retail, residential and student housing.

The redevelopment of the 77-acre site would be funded by public and private sources, the organizations said in a statement. Carter’s preliminary proposal would include a 30,000-seat football stadium on the Turner Field site and a Georgia State baseball complex. The baseball stadium would be designed in the former location of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium and would incorporate the Hank Aaron wall.Residential and student housing, retail businesses, green space and plazas also would be added to the property.

I cannot say enough about how excited I am to see this proposal. I really hope it comes to fruition. Not to be too blunt, but this development could bear out that the Braves leaving for Cobb County could be the best thing for this area of town. The City/County were never going to give over the development control that the Braves wanted. With the announcement of their departure, the remaining stakeholders are desperate to make lemonade out of lemons. I think something like this does even more than that.

1. This will provide a re-development that has vibrancy. If successful, there should be student housing, market rate housing, housing for lower/middle income families, retail, etc.

2. It will give GSU some sports facilities that are their own, and aren't way out in the burbs. It will help with developing a campus identity.

3. It preserves a bit of Atlanta's Olympic legacy. They will be able to keep part of Turner field / Olympic arena. This avoids the unnecessary demolition of a building far to early.

4. By re-building a baseball field on the grounds of the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, and preserving the "Hank Aaron" wall, it also pays homage to another pivotal moment in Atlanta sports history. This is important in a town that has so few.

5. It should connect to the streetcar system via the Downtown-Grant Park leg in Phase 2 of the implementation plan. Thus giving it transit service that isn't bus service.

6. I have already read that it could lead to more enhancements of the "Liberty Plaza" concept on the East side of the capital building. So, the halo effect of this development could expand further.

7. Over time, with this development seriously upgrading this spot and the already hot Grant Park neighborhood to the East, this could lift the whole area between the connector and Grant Park.

Anyway, go GSU!

Agreed on all points! GSU is the catalyst for the transformation to an urban Downtown. Along with the streetcar, and other things in the works, I see Downtown in a few years having a climate change of energy. This will only produce more and more development.

The Braves wanted something for nothing. They wanted to a) not have to buy the property, b) have the city improve the stadium, c) be able to bid on developing the property, and d) have a say in what was approved for development. They were looking for a handout and wanted to sit on both sides of the table in regards to development.

I think this proposal is genius and will not only benefit the city but go a long way to giving GSU a real campus and dispelling its reputation as one of the nation's ugliest. I went to GSU for three years before transferring to school here in NYC. Hope the city and school can make this happen.

First Look: Upscale Townhomes Bound For Old Fourth Ward

Quote:
Ground should break this summer on an "industrial modern" complex bringing eight high-end townhomes and two stand-alone houses to the Old Fourth Ward, all in the shadow of the neighborhood's historic concrete water tower.

urvey: Atlanta No. 22 global city brand

Posted on 5/6/2014 8:23:00 AM by Rebecca Burns

Well, Atlanta, be careful what you wish for. The endless touting of the ATL as a world-class city is paying off, with our town squeaking into the top 25 on a new Guardian study of global city brands. Barely.

We’re No. 22, sandwiched between Melbourne and Mecca. We can muster pride in being one of only six U.S. cities on the list; take that, Houston and Charleston! But when you go toe-to-toe with other world cities, the assessment can be harsh. “There just isn't enough for visitors to see to make the capital of Georgia competitive with the top tier of U.S. cities,” writes the Guardian’s Chris Michael. Ouch. But, what do you expect when the World of Coca-Cola goes up against the Louvre and Sagrada Familia?

The Guardian commissioned the brand survey from Saffron, a consulting company that specializes in city branding and published a ranking of European cities in 2008. The study considered a city’s “assets,” which range from weather to infrastructure, safety, economic prosperity, and “buzz.”

Factors in Atlanta’s favor include transportation (although Michael’s praise for MARTA was mystifyingly enthusiastic; one presumes he's never been stuck in the bowels of the Peachtree Center station waiting for a delayed train) and our stature in the hip-hop world. Aside from a dearth of attractions, Atlanta was also dinged as “dangerous in places.”

Getting from point A to point B is a chicken and egg problem in which we either 1) start building the density and allow for temporary increase in automobile traffic congestion then have people resort to other modes for congestion relief, or 2) start building the infrastructure for the alternative modes (transit, bike lanes, etc) then build the density.
In the first case you will hear people complain about congestion. In the second case you will hear people complain about runaway government spending on useless infrastructure.
I cannot see any other way to get from point A to point B, and I believe pretty much everybody on this forum agrees that this needs to happen. What do you think?
I support adding density (and support this project) and agree that some people will be incented to use public transportation more as the density is added, but that won'twork for some people. I'm a lawyer who unavoidably has extremely variable hours (have no idea on any given night whether I have to stay until 2:30 in the morning if an emergency arises, which happens with some frequency), and I can't take MARTA home to Roswell in those circumstances. Mostly because MARTA takes too long in the middle of the night. You might say don't live in Roswell, but I have three children and have genuine need of a reasonably-priced spacious home and solid public schools. Plus Roswell is really nice.

Anyway, I'm really happy to hear that the developers are being so thoughtful about the traffic issue and are trying to find ways for the new cars to access through W. Peachtree and 15th Street, rather than make a bad situation on 14th Street worse.
