Currently +2C in Moncton at 11 AM and partly cloudy.

Three of the next seven days in the long range forecast show above zero temperatures. Could it be? Could our annual national nightmare be coming to an end???

+8c in Kamloops. Been such a warm winter. We've had a few blasts of cold, but a few days prior to Christmas we say +20c.

Yesterday my car reported +12c again.

The long term forecast is looking good for the GTA, with a decent warm stretch start towards the middle of next week. But first, another blast of cold air Sunday & Monday.

We will likely see our first stretch of 10+ degree days since early November. Days are getting longer as well - sun now setting after 6 PM.

Look out for flooding in parts of southern Ontario - still lots of snow pack + multiple days in the teens could lead to rapid snow melting and high river levels. Could get ugly!

Today is a b it below average, but the sun is shining. Currently -2.

7 day: -1/5/4/-5/-5/1/5

Truth is if you are younger than 30, you have never experienced anything like this in your life.
Got me thinking how this winter stacks up compared to the notorious 13/14 & 14/15, some stats for Toronto below. I know Montreal followed similar patterns, but not exactly.

13/14 Dec/Jan/Feb
High: -1/-4.6/-4.3
Low: -7.3/-12.7/-12.3
Mean: -4.2/-8.6/-8.3
Snow: 29.3/32.2/39.5

Season Average
High: -3.3
Low: -10.8
Mean: -7.1
Snow: 101 cm

14/15 Dec/Jan/Feb
High: 2.7/-2.8/-8.2
Low: -2.6/-12.3/-17.0 (lol)
Mean: 0.0/-7.6/-12.6
Snow: 21.0/16.2/39.0

Season Average
High: -2.8
Low: -10.6
Mean: - 6.7
Snow: 76.2

25/26 Dec/Jan/Feb
High: 0.6/-3.1/-1.5
Low: -7.5/-9.9/-9.9
Mean: -3.5/-6.5/-5.7
Snow: 43/89.4/26.8

Season Average
High: -1.3
Low: -9.1
Mean: -5.1
Snow: 159.2 cm

13/14 & 14/15 were definitely colder, but 25/26 blows them away in snowfall totals. So I guess it depends which one you have more tolerance for.

Season Average
High: -4.6
Low: -13.3
Mean: -9
Snow: 151.8 cm

If we only take the 3 "winter" months, 14-15 is colder although this year has more snow. However our winter started in November.

November 2013
High: 4.7
Low: -3.0
Mean: 0.9
Snow: 16.2 cm

November 2014
High: 4.9
Low: -1.2
Mean: 1.9
Snow: 17.2 cm

November 2025
High: 4.0
Low: -1.7
Mean: 1.2
Snow: 27.8

14-15 had a warmer November while 13-14 was slightly colder. What makes 25-26 so bad is the early winter start. 10+ cm of snow more in November is massive.
First snow in 2025 is November 9th, first snow in 13-14 was November 26th, first snow in 14-15 was November 17th.

No double digit highs after November 8th in 2025, November 2013 and 2014 had double digits high throughout the whole month.

So basically the first week of November was fine, then winter hit us and the last 3 weeks were frigid. Not the case in 13-14 and 14-15.

The polar vortex winters of 2014 and 2015 had more extreme cold days. This year winter started early, it was consistently cold and it snowed a lot. At least for my station, it wasn't extreme cold, it only dropped below -20 two times. But qualitatively, it was a long, hard winter, especially after several recent "non winters"

Those Toronto and Montreal temperatures don't seem too bad, at least in comparison to many other cities in the country, but the snowfall, especially in Montreal has been notable.

We should be done with 'winter' in Victoria, although that really isn't a season anymore other than the odd arctic blast if it dips down low enough. Basically it's 5 months of a long cool spring (January to May) after a short wet autumn (October to December).

Might dip to 1 C in the next day or two, but that's should be the end of flirting with zeros. Just checked the main weather station in the city - Gonzales and for this winter we've had a total of 8 hours where the temperature reading was below 0 C and zero hours where the temperature hit -0.9 or colder.

-January 25th during the 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. hour where it hit -0.2 C

-Night of February 19th into the early morning of the 20th where the low hit the low of -0.8 and there were 7 hours were the temperature was below zero.

The Victoria airport would be similar perhaps a dozen more hours in total below zero. Vancouver also had a mild winter and would have similar numbers. Ballpark numbers, looks like Montreal would have about 2,000 or so hours below zero since November 1?

Still going back this year, but in September, lol and waiting until May for my third consecutive yearly Toronto visit.

Looking forward to that mild stretch. Two years in a row of prolonged snow cover after I got used to seeing grass in the past several winters.

Anyway, here’s a squirrel sun bathing in the winter and the end result of an overzealous snow plow.

For fun, I have spent the free time allotted to me by my prison guards over the last two months calculating normals by hand from every EC weather station data sample from the past 20 years ending in 2025 at Halifax Dockyard (a "2006-2025" normal).

This yields average highs and lows:

January [ 2.1, -5.3 ]
February [ 1.7, -6.2 ]
March [ 5.2, -2.0 ]
April [ 9.5, 2.2 ]
May [ 14.3, 6.0 ]
June [ 20.1, 11.3 ]
July [ 24.1, 15.6 ]
August [ 23.9, 16.2 ]
September [ 20.8, 13.5 ]
October [ 15.5, 8.8 ]
November [ 9.7, 2.8 ]
December [ 4.7, -2.3 ]

A pleasant day. Dry, calm, mild and mostly cloudy.

Thursday's high at Vancouver Harbour was 12 C, the low was 8 C.

It looks like Halifax has a couple of cold days ahead of some more spring-like weather. In Athens this morning it's mostly sunny with a forecast high in the mid-teens. It's not as warm as Lisbon has been over the past week but nice none the less.
