Oh yeah. The snow's blowing very hard in Ottawa. Wind's at 40 an hour.

If only we had a highway that was impervious to weather. I wonder if having an identical road 100 feet to the left of the current road would help?????

@vid knowing you (especially your sarcasm)...

For the record, I’m pretty quiet about twinning TCH throughout Northern Ontario now.

I’ve been calling for a retractable roof over the 401 in Toronto to spare Torontonians from driving in the rain. I’m sure once the technology is perfected it could be scaled to the north accordingly.

I wonder if the brilliant engineers that first thought up smart phones envisioned how much time everyone would waste doing trivial things on the internet...

Well, whether or not people waste time with them isn’t at all on the engineers; it’s on the people.

I am using a good ol' fashion desktop personal computer, thank you very much. My phone can't do the interwebs.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this but I've been a member here since before smartphones were invented.

Just imagine if there was a way to transport goods and people on something that did not need to slow down or get cancelled due to bad weather?

Unfortunately, Canada gets the shorter end of the stick (compared to U.S.) when it comes to climate.

I was talking about railways.

I think it's the same with them. If the weather's too harsh, trains don't run either (snow-blowing locomotives excepted).

Well thats kind of a bad idea ... Will it even work? How many days will the 401 be closed (knowing Canada's delays)? How much will it cost?

Actually, moving trains across the tracks will keep the snow clear.

Trains rarely ever have to stop, they can go through deep snow like it's nothing. Alberta's deal to ship oil by rail probably rules out any future passenger rail up here, though.

Highways are rarely closed for more than a couple of days per year, except in the most snowy/stormy areas of the province.

It's an expensive solution to a non-problem.

Yes, it sucks when the highways close, but most people hunker down and wait it out. Just like they always have.
