Good photos of the progress here. These towers should be topped out by Christmas.

These towers by far (of the current builds) stand out everywhere I go in the lower city, it's pretty neat to catch a glimpse of them in different neighbourhoods and elevations. In the last month they really took over the skyline.

The one downside as noted by Chronamut, is the lack of a heritage reference on the King St podium.

This one is really taking shape! What floors are they working on?

It might turn out as good if not better than the renders.

I know you love more historical looking podiums, Shawn
Overall this project is a huge win for downtown Hamilton. Two 30 storeys at once! (nearby Buffalo wishes it had this level of residential development)

thanks. yeah it's looking really... hefty! a heckuva lot of new residents just from one project.

hehe yes I do, but in this case it goes beyond that because of its location on an uninterrupted historical stretch of original core buildings that have existed since pre-confederation in some form or other - I feel they could have at least tried to restore a facade that existed before the kresges building. I hate seeing modern sore thumbs- it's kinda ironic modern ages so quickly yet traditional ages like a fine wine..

I don't agree that all modern ages quickly. To me it's about identifying fads, versus architecturally significant motifs that won't expire. The work of Frank Lloyd Wright for example was modern at the time it was being built, and yet it has aged incredibly well. Valuable architecture comes from attempting to emulate art through design. The issue is that much of our modern architecture is based off a utilitarian or financially related cause.

Glass over class as I say. When all new builds are just boxy jutouts or glass boxes over steel its no longer architecture, it's just ikea buildings..

the 80s modern esp aged horribly - the trend now seems to be very stark design elements - I tell people - you know a good build when it will be eligible for heritage protection 100 years from now.

Franks stuff is.. debateable, some has, some hasn't. I like his stuff that has more flowing lines and curves. It just feels these days it's all about max profit for little to no craftsmanship - and the architect in me dies when I see that - it doesn't even need a ton of elements for me - a pediment above a window here, a slightly fancy cornice there, something to tie it in better.

New builds feel like they're pulled from a template, esp stuff like vranich's vs any actual unique design elements of their own - I mean thank god for liuna and core urban, esp core urban for giving us some diversity. I wish core urban had designed the podium and these architects had designed the towers.

Any what builds will be eligible for heritage protection in 100 years? Looking back at history, the small minority not torn down in 50 years for being ‘aging eyesores’.

So many widely loved buildings today were hated when they were built, and even more were seen as outdated junk people wanted torn down at some point during their lifespan.

The amt of heritage buildings torn down were mainly due to the fact it became too expensive to upkeep them, they were too cold etc

Things like kresges were contested as to whether or not they were worth keeping - I think if the stamped designs had been left on the buildings top and not torn down they might have been able to save the podium - but in the 80s they seemed to go through this trend of destroying anything classical or detailed they could.

These days however the requirements for how you can harm or tear down a building are much more strict - it's why the pre-confederate buildings on the south side of king in gore park were left.. well to rot at this point - I honestly hope they salvage them, as the designs for what they want to do look very nice. How crazy is it that we can't even USE the south side of our downtown core? The very place that used to be the heart of shopping. There used to be so much class down here that the presidents wife from the USA actually came specifically down here to shop for china for the white house at one point. Everyone forgets hamilton used to have CLASS.

If you put an "h" next to the file extension you get a large image instead of a massive one too.
