To be honest, those west coast cities didn't have to deal with "white flight", and neither did Austin, which might as well be Salt Lake City when it comes to racial diversity.
Large cities in the South are now playing catch up, due to decades of whites choosing to leave the urban cities for the suburbs. Now, gentrification is an issue that must be addressed to retain racial diversity in the urban core.
So, tell your west coast friends (including Austin and Denver), our diversity is worth embracing and we are a melting pot that they will envy in the near future.
Atlanta's
urban core (downtown & Midtown) is rapidly becoming the South's urban oasis - once all of the currently proposed projects are completed.
