Thanks! Variety is my word to describe it.

Living here since 2011 and everytime I get out, I always manage to find a new detail or angle I haven't see before!

Nice set of Quebec photos FrAnKs! Love the peek around the corner and contrasting elements theme you have going on - plus a croissant thrown in for extra measure

What’s the story with this beautiful building?

Thank you very much! I had lots of fun taking these : )

This building used to be the windmill of the nearby Hôpital général de Québec (Quebec's general hospital), which is unfortunately not featured in my pictures.
Both have been built during the french regime just off the city in what used to be a rural area along St. Charles river.

Interesting fact: The hospital is situated in a very small municipality called ''Notre-dame-des-anges'' which is enclaved within the city of Québec and consists only of the hospital.

My first thoughts went to the windmills on Mykonos.

I can see the resemblance. I like white materials like this.

Thanks for the historical background on the hospital windmill FrAnKs. The Wikipedia photo shows it with the exposed stonework, so I suppose relatively recently they covered it in stucco - perhaps that was how it was originally finished?

Nice deep dive on the that Commercial Union building and its neighbours Rico. Not sure how highly it ranks in Montreal in terms of great buildings, its gotta be up there, or is it lost in the big mix of really nice buildings?

Beyond a handful of goofy architectural nerds such as myself, I don't think anyone knows anything, has noticed, or cares about this building to be honest.

I asked because when I did a quick Google search there was almost nothing on this building. Maybe my Googling skills are failing me or likely the truth is what you just stated. Which is surprising as it would have been one of the earlier skyscrapers. Found this description from the leasing company:

"This skyscraper, built in 1904-1905 for the Sovereign Bank, replaces a three-story warehouse store. The Sovereign Bank occupied the first two floors. On the upper floors, there were offices for companies, lawyers, notaries, brokers and a consulate. In 1908, it was sold to the Commercial Union Assurance Company, which sold it in 1969 after occupying it for 60 years."

This site has every single building in Old Montreal catalogued complete with a history of the building and site and photos. This link is for the sovereign bank building. It's in French though.

https://www.vieux.montreal.qc.ca/inv...p?sec=o&num=20

It's a very fine building, but yes it's one of a few dozen 130 footers (the height limit at the time) in the area so it doesn't stand out, especially since its neighbour is the royal bank building.

Pretty neat little skyline I'd say. Especially for a city of about 150K.

^it is even better at the street level. Uptown (their 'downtown') Saint John has a great collection of Victoria-era buildings, as demonstrated by KnoxfordGuy's great photo collection on this page.

With the freeway leading to the buildings, Saint John gives the impression of a much larger city.
