Stong's has temporarily closed on Dunbar (a boon for the new Save-on-Foods I imagine)
and will reopen December 1st in a new development (the Ivy) down the street (@ West 27th)

Massimo Dutti is open now at Pacific Centre Mall in the new underground wing. I was surprised at how relatively reasonable the prices were for the upscale look and feel of the product and store. ($30 belts, $100 shoes, $75 button shirts). I only looked at the men's product.

I'll miss the old Stong's. I've been going for many years and it had become my go to place for fresh local lamb, meatloaf mix, spaetzle and Butter Bakery products. The last time I was there it was kind of sad to see the old west side matrons going around the half empty store looking a little shellshocked. It was like they couldn't believe that the redevelopment scourge had finally hit at the heart of their little community.

I also remember the old Stong's at Dundarave in West Vancouver, where the IGA store is now. I would stop there and pick up a few things after having a burger at the original Vera's Burger Shack at Dundarave Beach. Back when Vera was actually behind the counter serving up her handmade ground sirloin burgers for ~$2.75. She didn't have a deep fryer though. She told me that she couldn't be bothered with the mess. So, if you wanted chips with your burger then it was a bag of potato chips. There's something about a eating a fresh sizzling hot homemade burger while sitting on a log at the beach...

I look forward to checking out the new Stong's store at the Ivy development up the street. I think their plan to open the new store there by Christmas this year may be a bit ambitious given the current state of construction. Maybe they'll open the new store before the building is actually finished.

Yes it is difficult to imagine that hole in the ground being ready in 6 months I drive by on Dunbar 4 days/week-there's no urgency & little progress with the site.

Based on the pics, it looks similar to Banana Republic - just a bit higher end store with rugs and couches.

They are coming back with a new store. I believe they are still offering everything online with home delivery.

Surprised to see there's little demand for higher-end retail directly across from Holt's.

There's no "high end" cluster on Granville.
There's a menswear cluster (Dunn's, Tip Top and Moore's) but not high end.

The immediate neighbours are Joe Fresh and Moore's.
The rest of the block has fast food places, Shoppers Drug Mart, SFU and Rexall.

Frankly it's the last place I'd expect to see high-end retail.

Oh, high end stores will open up shop near Holt's, but only if retail spaces can also be high end, rather than the rather run-down offerings found along Granville at the moment. Just like Alberni, high-end retailers would only set up shop at either the new buildings (Shangri-la and 745 Thurlow) , or at existing buildings that went or is going through extensive face-lifts (Fortis building and the Carlye).

There are higher end stores a few blocks over in older buildings (i.e. Cartier), and the building stock on that stretch isn't really that old.

I think it's the existing mix of stores that isn't attractive.
(plus the ugly Ingledew's reno)

This looks like one of those pop up outlet stores that is only meant to last for a month.
