Well, they haven't even cleaned up the St. Boniface Cathedral and it burned down in 1968!

It's true that the building that replaced it didn't open until March 1912, but the construction must have began in 1911 at the latest. Still, from 1899-1911 it was left as rubble during Winnipeg's huge building boom, a stone's throw from P&M. Weird.

I recently saw a photo of Graham Avenue in 1906ish where you could see the hulking wreck of the hotel at the end of the street.

Realistically, many of the problems in Winnipeg that we complain about now have always plagued the city. The whole saga around the construction of the Legislature is very Katz-Sheegl-Caspianish. The incompetence in building the first City Hall on a creekbed and having it almost collapse into Main Street after under 7 years...I could go on!

^ Geez. History keeps repeating itself. It's kind of depressing when you put it in those terms.

Found the photo (in a collage). You can see the wreckage of the Scott block fire on the right hand portion of the photo. It was struck by lightning and burned in June 1905, so presumably this photo is shortly after. Peer down Graham on the left and the hulk at the end of the street is the Manitoba Hotel that burned 6 years prior to this photo being taken!

Yesterday i saw a bulldozer at the site of the Concordia Health and Fitness lot clearing out grass and debris. Could this finally be the start of the build?

Yes, 7 storeys - 175 units. Should start in Aug.

...no wellness centre though.

Phase B is supposed to have the wellness centre, but we'll see.

I have been told there will not be a Phase B now.

The project is through the Concordia Foundation. Ray Wan is the Architect.

a Hyatt Centric-branded hotel will soon come to downtown Winnipeg as its first Western Canada franchise. The $38.6-million project, being developed by the Kothari Group, will convert a vacant six-storey building at 325 Broadway into a 140-room Hyatt Centric hotel that will feature a full-service restaurant and spa.

The Manitoba government will provide $5.2 million in support for the project over 20 years

Hyatt Centric is a full-service lifestyle brand hotel designed for business and leisure travellers and that will use local elements in its interior design. The sole Hyatt Centric hotel in Canada is in Montreal,

Interesting... the old Revenue Canada Building. At first, I wondered if it might be the Wawanesa building. Also a good candidate for a hotel or residential conversion.

The funding announcements just keep on coming from the province! Is this 5.2 million in TIF funding from a different program than the one offered by the city, I wonder?

^ Weird that the province is throwing money at a hotel in downtown Winnipeg.

But that said, it's a great location for a hotel. It shows off a nicer side of downtown Winnipeg than what people would see staying on Portage Avenue, and it will probably give Broadway a bit of a shot in the arm with guests looking for restaurants, etc. Hyatt is pretty underrepresented in Manitoba so it might entice some people who are brand loyal.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing it come together. It's about the best possible re-use of the former CRA building.

I've noticed some lights on in that building, was wondering if something might be getting started with it.

Shame that Starbucks just closed their location nearby on Broadway.
