Beside the new development being constructed by the Unitarians on Wellington Cres., I noticed an old mansion with torn canopies and a statue in an overgrown front yard. It looks like it has been vacant for quite some time.

Any idea who used to live there and what's going on with the property? It's 657 Wellington I think.

What will be built by the Unitarians where the Shriners building was?

Yeah Tuxedo blvd is shut down most of the weekend, I assume that’s the reason.

Not sure if 657 wellington is related to the Shriners Hospital, which was torn down.

So that proposal on Wellington with the 10 units and private street is going on the Shriners site?

Burned out shell of a building still on Main St. with debris still blocking the sidewalk, WTF, where else would this be left to linger FFS...

Whole area around it is F'n depressing, drove over the Slaw Rebchuk bridge and there is homeless cabin in the middle of a city park to the east of the bridge....

True...but the fire was 6 months ago! What about the safety hazard leaving it in that condition? What about the statement it makes about the city and community? Why would anyone care about their property when the community is left to burn away, left in heaps of burned out rubble? It is a shameful disregard for everyone who lives and works in the area. This area is bad enough; steps need to be taken to avoid a repeat.

While I am not an industrial hygienist, probably leaving the rubble intact is less harmful right now then doing demolition and causing dust until the owner and Manitoba Environment agree if there is a harmful amount of asbestos residue in the rubble pile.

As the building owner has to pay the demolition cost out his insurance settlement he does not want to have to pay for a "wet" removal if it is not required.

But I do agree that Manitoba Environment should be sharing their sampling results with the owner to compare with his envinromental contractors testing to resolve this issue quickly for the area residents.

Yes, The Shriner's Hospital. Over the last few decades it was rehab and equipment distribution for the physically disabled.

Exactly, it’s a slap in the face to anyone who lives in the vicinity, no way in hell a site would be allowed to sit like that if it was in south Winnipeg!

The current mayor a city clowncil show a dereliction of duty when stuff like this sits and sits! Maybe if the current city clowncillor for the area actually set foot in her ward more than once every 4 years….

There is also the burnt out pile of rubble at the foot of Lily Street and Disraeli.

That pile has been sitting since the winter. The City needs to remediate and just add the costs to the tax bill. To suggest the rubble can’t just be hosed down and placed on a truck and removed is bureaucratic idiocy. The longer it sits the worse the problem gets. These properties may have had some lead paint or asbestos ceiling tiles. Trace amounts detected by over zealous inspectors.

The new BMO signage up at P&M on 201 Portage. I think it looks great, can't wait to see it at night.

The Shriners is already levelled. If someone is talking about a Mansion looking run down then it’s a different property.

Not a fan of the signage. It's too loud and tacky right on the facade like that, and having more than one bank's signs up there makes it look pretty low rent. Maybe in the short term the landlord gets a few extra bucks but it cheapens the image of the tower itself.

The Manitoba Hotel, at the corner of Water and Main, burned in 1899 and the burnt shell stood until 1912. It's a Winnipeg thing.
