Ha thats funny I was driving to fairhope today and I guy nearly slammed on breaks because he was looking at the tower and almost slammed into the side of the tunnel.
Any chance we can get some pics of the battlehouse rennovations. I guess that might require an inside guy, but I would love to see some of the interior work on that(outside has looked the same for 100 years). The renderings looked amazing but I am curious to see what it is looking like. Also curious about the inside of the RSA building too.
^Wow, that looks awesome... now if that could happen in my lifetime that would be great. That is really cool. Look at the AmSouth Bank Building... still standing out among the crowd...
Not directly associated with the tower but pertaining to downtown in general, there was an interesting article about the civic center in today's press register. It discusses the future of the building and a recent report done to see how to best use it/improve it. The article mentions that several developers have asked the city about buying the entire property for redevelopment after destruction of the civic center. Pretty interesting. Also made me think we need a general mobile/downtown development thread now that the RSA project is coming to a close and the only other thread is for residential development.
Tear that bitch down. They destroyed our oldest buildings to put it there and its only used for mardi gras balls now. Surely we can find another good location downtown for that (conv center, hotel ballrooms, etc.

Yes, with the newly renovated Battle House Ball Room, I'm sure they can have a ball.
I'm from Birmingham but was in Mobile last week for work. I spent a good bit of time downtown, and I noticed a couple of things.
First, I thought Dauphin Street looked great. It looked to me like a pretty vibrant area and that some of the blank spots were beginning to fill in.
Second, I noticed that the blocks to the north of Dauphin Street seemed pretty dead. Lots of run down buildings in need of repair, and lots of empty lots that look like they must have been bulldozed at some point in the past. It occurred to me that there is a lot of available real estate down there that represents potential for downtown Mobile to develop a vibrant, downtown community, with a mixture of commercial and residential development. It's a shame that more historic structures don't remain, but if a development pattern can emerge that respects the area's history, downtown Mobile could evolve into a great city.
Does anyone have pictures of what those areas were like in decades past? Also, is there any momentum at all for new development north of Dauphin Street in the blocks west of Royal?
It seems like a tough sell for redevelopment because it is so close to some not so nice areas but I guess the shear size of the plot makes it better. I honestly think we might be better off to sell it if the Mitchell Center would pick up the slack but I doubt USA wants their arena to double as the cities arena. I think it would be cool if the Ft Conde Village reconstruction could spread out and use this space to build some upscale architecturally similar housing on that land. Then maybe we would have the downtown population/speding that could attract the major retail development everyone wants so badly. Im sure the offers have been for large retail, condo towers, office space etc. There was an article a while back about a theme park(six flags or the like) for the area. That might be good use of that space. I would be really curious to know what the offers had planned.

Actually, there are some really nice, new houses right behind the covic center. My wife and I looked forever for a house in Chruch Street East, but one never went on the market that was large enough. If you go down Canal Street and look to the north, most of those houses were built in the 90's and are very nice.

Maybe that's why WSL is taking so long, they've probably jumped ship on the CSX site.
