It’s interesting to see that the number for fatal crashes due to inattention has dropped sharply. The change in other statistics doesn’t seem significant otherwise.

Speaking of highways, who thinks a freeway bypass of Thunder Bay and Mattawa will ever happen? Never. The Thunder Bay bypass is reliant on the twinning of the 17 to Kenora and AT LEAST Nipigon. A Mattawa bypass needs a Cobden bypass and freeway twinning in both directions to North Bay and from Arnprior.

A bypass of Mattawa is quite likely to happen but I can't see it being a freeway in our lifetimes. It would be a two-lane highway through a largely undeveloped area, similar to Hwy 17 in the Pembroke and Petawawa areas.

Well, I think they have started planning ... If they wanted the 17 to become a freeway someday, then when they build something (Realignment, Repaving etc ... ) they should just upgrade it.

If I were to guess, Mattawa will not be a 2 lane bypass, but a 4 lane divided bypass. It will likely be done as they extend 417, or when they extend it from North Bay. Likely not for at least 10 years.

When the liberal government planned it in 2012, the construction was meant to begin in 2035, so you estimated well.

I'm still wondering when Hwy 11/17 will be a freeway going through North Bay. It didn't happen with having an MPP as Premier and doesn't seem to be happening with an MPP who is finance minister.

The strange thing is that it was the Harris PCs who actually studied and started the planning it. The MTO has purchased a number of properties and has a corridor. But I guess it's one of those projects that still isn't a dire need.

They may do things in the back, but they don't want to look like they are spending taxpayers money.

Looking at the past, the PCs don't advance anything positive in the North.

Right now, the PCs will likely get more political mileage from not hacking away at social services that serve the older population in the city. So, expect Fedeli to gift the hospital and the like with government handouts.

A freeway through the city isn't really on most people's priority list. In fact, it might arouse more opposition than benefit, as it would annoy the fiscal conservatives and the anti-highway crowd.

Generally, this is true with a few exceptions - things in Nipissing District generally get funded and Ernie Eves' announcement of the 400 completion to Sudbury (that his predecessor cancelled).

The PCs did carry the Sault and Kenora-Rainy River though, so maybe the north won't be as neglected.

A lot of people have been affected. Basically, can't leave Timmins. Cannot go north much of Sudbury or SSM either.
