From the south looking north yes. But looking at downtown from the north, west, or east, it wont have a major impact. I honestly like Block 71 and The Republic, (if it happens), more than this project. The biggest and most significant skyline changer happening is 6X, which I think everyone is excited for!

I'd throw 44 East into that mix because of its height and location.

Ah yes! 44 East is going to make a huge impact from the south, SE, and East. E. Riverside Dr. has a great view of downtown going west. 44 East, is going to block some a lot of that, now that I think about it. But it will look dominating from that direction!

I agree with the previous 3 posts. While I do like this, its only because of the sheer glass walls on the east and west sides. Without those, we'd have just another, albeit nicer step back highrise. I'm just going to have to reserve my final judgement until its completed. I'm way more exciting about quite a few other projects being developed or u/c like the ones noted in the prior posts especially 6X. There's just something about this one that has always come up short of being great in my eyes but I can't quite put my finger on it because there's nothing really wrong with it. Maybe I just don't care for set backs.

Well, obviously, if it's blocked it won't have an impact but the most viewed area will be along its waterfront and that's what will be more recognizable in postcards, and such. (Do people still send postcards? )

Ha, Good question. I still see them for sale, but it's been many years since I got one and decades since I sent one.

Seems like postcards are sold more for nostalgia than anything these days. Kinda like why I bought a Fujifilm Insta camera. Sure you can have excellent quality even from phone cameras but to take a picture and be able to actually hold it in your hand watching it develope brings back so many memories of my childhood.

Just wanted to repost the latest renderings, since it is several pages back and others don't have to go digging for it. I think from the west, near MoPac and Town Lake, it will look pretty amazing. It will also look decent from the south.

185 certainly has a great style, I like the look on all 3 sides visible, but do wonder how it looks on the side facing the Proper. I am glad 185 is not just some bland rectangle.

More than all the others, it's going to take me a long time to get used to this one. It stands out in contrast to all of the other buildings and I'm not used to seeing something so fat and odd-shaped at the front of our skyline.

Maybe 6XG and The Republic will help take some of the focus off it.

I'm the opposite. I like this building precisely because it's differently shaped than the rest of the crowd. It's sail shape breaks up the monotony, aside from Austin Proper, though will only be able to see that from the west before long. Okay I'll add Independent as well, though they could have been more bold in displacing the sections like north/south as well as east/west.

I can appreciate the almost coordinated architectural conformity that our skyline seems to have (newer gen towers especially in the West End.) But you know what? I love London's towers! Now I know even mentioning London's modern skyline provokes strong opinions in both admiration and loathing of it. Personally I can spend a lot of time looking at London's fascinating and quirky skyscrapers.

Not saying Austin should have a lot of crazy buildings, but I think a couple would be refreshing. Block 185 really isn't even that radical architecturally, but it's different enough for Austin that it will set a new standard in how buildings can be built. One could argue that the Independent was the catalist because despite the debate over it's crown. It really has made a major statement. Block 71 is different enough for Austin that it will also drastically change the look of our skyline even moreso than Block 185 due to it's location.

There was an earlier rendering that showed the back. It's just going to be a shear glass wall, but looking at it from that angle will look pretty cool with the sail bowing out.

Yes, the horizontal rebar is for 1/2 of the mat slab which gets placed starting on the 25th. The vertical rebar is the base of the elevator cores.

I wonder how far they would be if there was no underground parking.

The parking podium would probably be either completed or close to completion

Another great collection of updates today, corvairkeith!

That mat foundation pour is currently scheduled for this weekend Fri-Sun (weather permitting of course).
