Ikea is currently flooded, inside and out.

Wow, I did not realize that IKEA had been hit that hard, but it makes complete sense. The massive paved parking, plus the roof, lots of catchment area for water that all has to go into the drainage systems, which simply aren't designed for 50mm/hr rainfall, plus all the local roadways and sewer systems completely at capacity... no surprise the floor drains spewed like that. I was driving along Kenaston when this happened and could not see out my windshield, it was raining so hard. Wipers full tilt. Wife freaking out like no tomorrow, SLOW DOWN!!!!

Yes, its a freak event, but severe thunderstorms are not uncommon here, so I wonder where the finger pointing is going to go for insurance purposes. Either way, if their warehouse got it, then anything at floor level is likely water damaged and wrecked.

Why were there not backwater valves on those drains?

Eitherway, it looks like they're still going ahead with their Midnight Madness sale today...

The coolest thing is it appears the water is coming up from the overrun floor drain, not down from the roof.

When I saw the IKEA pictures my first thought was "store standards to front checkouts for wet cleanup"

City Waste and Water engineer was on the radio this morning and was saying that at the city rain gauge @ the PanAM pool they were over the 100 year average for that location.

No wonder there was water shooting up, I think the city only designs land drainage for 25 year rain events.

The city also has a web page that shows major rain events from the different city rain gauge locations but last nights storm was not yet posted.

Shows how much the rain varied in the city.

Shops of Kildonan Mile on Reenders is up for rezoning. Didn't read through it all, but 2 year deadline for proceeding after rezoning.

Did you take a look at page 14, the site map? It shows Home Depot as one of the big box tenants. I find it curious that this would be accurate. I know that Kildonan Mile has been in the works for a long time so it could be that is an old site map. It would seem strange that Home Depot would be willing to invest the money in a new store when theirs isn't that old.....unless they are tired of being in a shitty location with terrible access across the street.

That map is dated 1998.

Yeah looks like that's an old one from 1998.

I've learned to navigate the Regent area fairly well over the years. The best way, AVOID IT! The other way, never turn left anywhere. I'll do the loop around Stapon and Reenders to get out of their as opposed to trying to turn left onto Regent or left across Regent.

Anyone know what's going in at the old Future Shop on Regent across from KP? Looks like they're doing work inside. I couldn't even guess what would go in that massive space?

I wil hazard a guess - SportsCheck which is located immediately to the east is going through a reimaging of stores across Canada. Perhaps they are refreshing their existing store and will be sliding over a little into the old Future Shop space. This would then free up some/all of their old space for a new tenant. The Future Shop space is a more high profile location for them.

Other possibilites currently in the Winnipeg market would include Marshalls, Home Sense and Bed, Bath and Beyond. The space is a bit of an odd shape though being fairly narrow at the front and deeper than it is wide. Unless the SportsCheck setup I mentioned is happening it could be more difficult than average to find someone.

I would not be surprised to see any of the stores you mention adding some locations, especially in the Regent area. They also fit with the four brand new 'large' spaces that are being built on Kenaston at the Linden Ridge Shopping Centre. The one on the corner looks like a 'Dollar' chain store to me, but the other three could be any combination of the above.

The only issue with the Liden Ridge Shopping Centre is that it is too close to the existing Home Sense store unless Winnipeg is getting a semi-detached Home Sense/Winners combo to replace the existing Home Sense store. That said, Winners could swap into that previous list for Liden Ridge. I would also put SportsCheck and Staples on the list as they are oddly missing from the area considering their presence elsewhere in Winnipeg.

Speaking of retail in the south Winnipeg area, anyone have any updates on if Lowes is still going ahead with their story for Seasons of Tuxedo? I thought it was suppose to openly within about six months of Cabela's yet that store is done and construction have yet to start for Lowes.
