They put in part of the vents for the thermal plant...I'm guessing this whole thing under the bridge is part of that plant.

Took these pictures today:

Cool. Thanks. The pipes jutting to the side must connect to the "fingers" with the leds at the tops that will change colours.

I think they were taking another crane down this morning. That leaves just one crane left.
Quite a contrast to this, taken in February:

Here's some data on the public realm of the Olympic village. There is an incredible amount of work that has done into this project. It truly is mind boggling. Suggest you d/l the document before opening. Enjoy.

75 pages! that's a good read.

a lot of stuff i never saw when walking through the area, like:

homage to the 1913 shoreline,
the medallions, and
the vista lids

its hard to believe they are going to cram up to 11,000 people into these few blocks so beautifully. That's like the entire population of Terrace BC. wow.

Thanks, Jlousa.
The amount of different kinds of flora they have planted there is awesome.
They really spent a lot of time on every minute detail.

thanks jlousa!

BTW does anyone know how Translink ended up with the large piece of land in SEFC? Its the piece that runs along Quebec.

My guess would be it used to be a bus or trolley storage or maintenance site?

Check out these 1982 and 1985 Global Air Photos (buses in 1985 shot?) - could be a legacy property from BC Electric...

holy. 27 years and so much change. it does not even look like the same city.

the creation of the current false creek must of been one of the deciding moments for Vancouver. that whole area is completely transformed

It was the defeat of the various freeway plans that was the defining moment that allowed the creation of the residential around False Creek. There was a freeway planned along the north side which would have made the south side really noisy. Just go to Portland to see what that would have been like.

a non event was the defining event? i do not think it works that way. there are many bad ideas that do not make it.

but sure, i get your point.

Wow, those are great! Having not lived here for very long, I always wondered why there was so many empty lots and vacant land along the south side of Terminal. Now I know what used to be there!

Not to be arguing semantics either, but stopping something from happening is an action.

It takes just as much effort - if not more - to organize to stop a civic action as it does to promote support for a change or improvement. That is particularly true if the vested interests have momentum started to move forward with their plans.

So I rank the stopping of the waterfront freeways that would have blanketed the shores of downtown Vancouver as an event. Just like stopping freeways from running through Greenwich village was an event for NYC, and stopping the freeway system from destroying a number of historic neighborhoods was an event for DC.

Let's just be thankful that this 'event' did take place in Vancouver...

The corner of Thurlow and Comox pic is bizarre, it looks like the world's worst planned freeway.

The one along the Waterfront though looks so so, for it looks as if the city could have simply built over top of it (which the city has done with the skytrain and several parts of the CP rail bed) and that portion of road could have become a tunnel that no one could tell was there.

Again you can have dense city cores with lots of character and have elevated and tunneled road systems, but the majority of the planning for this system did look terrible (to wide, to much at grade, to much lost shoreline) and i am happy it did not proceed.

I do think we need to keep the small two viaducts we have though, it is the only decent way in and out of the core for commercial traffic.

I agree. It is an action - there were rallies and protests. A lot of behind the scenes action as well (ie. lobbying).

It was a seminal moment in the history of our young city and this ACT is recognized as such.

Wow, yeah, we would not win any liveable city awards or world's best city awards if Vancouver turned out like that. We would have been seattle north.

However, I do kind of wish that the Georgia/Dunsmuir viaducts didn't just turn into venables street, cause that is stupid. I wish it was at least as wide as hastings or gransdview, or that there was a tunnel under east van from the viaducts to the freeway.
