What can they do?

It is absurd to blame developers or the police for things like this.

From the information I've gathered from online sources it seems this happened inside an apartment building at AS and not in the retail district and if I'm wrong please correct me. If the info I've read is correct what makes this more than any other shooting at an apartment complex. Unfortunately there is nothing the police or AS can do about it.

There is plenty the owner of the complex can do.

Your link is not referencing yesterday's shooting, that is an article for the shooting in March. Here’s yesterdays: http://www.11alive.com/news/article_...storyid=100451

There already is an APD precinct next to Target, behind Publix and less than 100yds from where the shooting took place. The police were able to walk to the scene of the crime. I’m not sure this can be blamed on lack of police presence in ATL station.

What I would like to know is who were the tennants involved. Was the drug dealer the renter, a friend of the renter? Did the apartment have a direct lease with the renter, or was he a subleaser? Was this a section 8 renter? Do they perform criminal background checks when you apply to lease and what was the criminal background of the renter. What type of security measures do these apartments have? With 1 bedrooms renting up to $1600/month these apts should be able to make the place appear so secure that the drug dealers will go somewhere else to shoot each other.

The only absurdity here is the implication that I'm blaming the developers for the shooting.

Were you not implying that they can do something about the behavior of their tenants? If so, I see this as placing a portion of the blame on them.

Please tell me what they could have done to address this? I mean, other than resort to tactics that are illegal in the US?

No, you were jumping to conclusions. The concern was ventured that the recent mayhem might affect sales at AS. I simply suggested that the developers would take steps necessary to ensure that the environmedent was conducive for business. That is manifestly not blaming the developers for the shootings.

Not a problem, Terminus. And for the record, I believe that developers get the brunt of all sorts of unwarranted criticisms. I myself admire folks who place their capital at risk, as developers do.

This is a general Atlantic Station thread. I'd say that it was appropriate here. Although, I don't see the big fuss. Atlantic Station should be seen as just another part of the city where crime is bound to happen. Especially with the high number of visitors to the area.

I visited Atlantic Station for the first time last Saturday and was pretty impressed by its walk-ability.

What are they planning to do in the area where part of the old steel mill still exists?

No Clue. It will eventually be retail, office, or residential of course. Atlantic Station wont be done for 10-15 years I would guess.

Law firm headed to BB&T tower

Atlanta Business Chronicle - 3:07 PM EDT Monday, July 23, 2007
Law firm Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice PLLC will leave the Atlantic Center building for the BB&T tower in Atlantic Station.

The firm has signed a lease to occupy the top four floors (22-25), or about 100,000 square feet, of the tower starting March 2009. The lease was negotiated by Keene Reese and Brad Armstrong of The Staubach Co. and Patrick Duffy and Bert Sanders of Newmark Knight Frank.

Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice currently has Atlanta offices at 1201 West Peachtree St. It has 135 staff and 70 attorneys in Atlanta, but plans to add up to another 70 attorneys.

Last week, Winston-Salem-based BB&T Corp. reported it would anchor the 25-story tower, which will open in early 2009 as Atlantic Station's tallest office tower and will have a total of 530,000 square feet. BB&T plans to occupy 80,000 square feet.

This means that the building is about 33% committed before construction begins.
