Yep. Daughters of the Republic are cool. I'm a son of the Republic, but have never gone through the application process. My ancestors didn't fight in the war, but moved to Texas in 1837. I might look into it again.
Actually, my ancestors settled in what is now the Bastrop area in 1837. Guess who helped get some men/boys together to fight the raiding Comanche? General Burleson. My g-g-g-grandpa and his brother fought in all of those scrapes alongside Burleson, Hays, Bigfoot Wallace and all of those other famous names. The brother is buried in Devine and has a Texas State historical marker on his grave. He was one of the original Rangers. My g-g-g-grandpa was also a Ranger in those early days, but left to be a deputy of Caldwell County.
Another line of ancestors dates back to crossing into KY with Boone and living at Fort Harrod. My ancestor is actually a headless ghost story at Fort Harrod to this day.
