strange storey in the London Evening Standard today - showing a picture of the Beetham tower from high above it says that a "£400 a night hotel as high as the Gherkin is set to soar above the South Bank. The £600 million plans were revealed today by the Middle East company behind the spectacular Burj Al Arab 'sail' hotel in Dubai...scheduled to open in 2011'. Now I know that part of the Beetham tower was a hotel but there is no mention here of Beetham at all....and its the original Beetham tower not a redesign as far as I can see.

But it was initially supposed to be 226m tall, therefore taller than the Gherkin.
So, it may have been redesigned.

According to the Evening Standard, the Beetham Blackfriars Road Tower (with a new rendering making it look considerably nicer) will be called the Jumeirah tower. I don't know if anyone has any more details but apparently it will be the tallest purpose built tower block in Europe...

Edit: Didn't see the above posts.

The Shard, Bishopgate Tower, and now the Beetham tower have all been scaled back. This is annoying.

The familiar spike design of the Shard has not been scaled back. Only the very first proposal was taller - and it was never called "The Shard" back then.

The shard was cut back. There was the original design, the shard - then the shorter shard.

^ When? As far as I know there was the spiral design and since then the 310m design that we have currently. Only the latter was ever called "The Shard".

I don't remember that! As far as I remembered there was the original spiral design and then the current spike design at 310m. But I'll take your word for it. However it was never called "The Shard" back then.

Fabb is right. The first version was 386m tall. Do not know as it was referred to as the Shard.

Interesting: Piano made it clear in his speech in Southwark Cathedral last June that he preferred the tower to be called "The Spire"

I have noticed your disappointment in recent weeks. Do not leave ssc. Your input is very much appreciated and you have made the forum what it is now.

Indeed, speculation grows about how many of London's tower proposals will actually get built. Some other proposals are likely to be abandonned or postponed again.

However, I suspect you are slightly over-reacting. The Shard London Bridge is
now a dead cert. Crossharbour also has been confirmed again yesterday in the business review of the developer. And as you know, the Jumeirah Tower at Blackfriars is due to open in 2011 (contracts have been exchanged with Beetham). I am also confident about 122 Leadenhall starting in Q1 2007 as planned by BL.

There are more uncertainties reg. Heron, Bishopsgate, Riverside South, North Quay, etc. Indeed, some will never go ahead or postponed to the next decade.

But that's the way it is.
