Agreed. It's embarrassing that our supposed landmark urban intersection includes an unpaved gravel parking lot. Don't even get me started on the lots between main and the railroad tracks.

It's funny explaining to a lot of out of town guests that a lot of the buildings have blank sides/no windows because they originally were supposed to have a similarly sized building developed next to it or used to have a building next to it. (Confederation building, I'm lookin' at you) Usually because they ask "why does your downtown look so... 'unfinished'

Seriously, they ask that? Rude.

Yo folks - not sure if this is the appropriate thread to post this in, but Google Maps / Google Earth FINALLY UPDATED WINNIPEG as of 7/30/24! I've been waiting a decade for a local 3D update....

Unfinished? We tore what was already there down.

Buildings gone missing like teeth, indeed.

Lol, everyone talks about One Great City but Left and Leaving is the true Winnipeg anthem IMO. No feeling is more more peg-specific for me than finding myself back home after a long time away and missing the people who've left it behind. Oooof.

Thanks for the update. Too bad that it isn't newer than that. But it's better than a winter image. Those are gross.

Sweet! Now the building that I've worked in since 2018 (!) no longer shows as a parking lot.

That update took ... a while.

Nice updates to the 3D map! I don't remember how far out the 3D map went before, did it cover the whole City like it does now?

I did notice the air photo had been updated again when browsing recently.

On the topic of those Main St gravel lots along the tracks, what's the story on those? They seem underutilized, does the owner just not want to sell or develop? Are there restrictions being so close to the tracks?

Just waiting for the money. In whatever form that comes.

IIRC the owners are the same ones who do/did own the SkyCity lot. And other property around town. Or maybe the Erls people are also owners of some of the land as they wanted to develop the northern most lands for the new Earls but were rejected by the City.

IIRC someone jokingly mentioned the mob owns it and like, a thousand parking lots around the city, and is waiting for 'the right sale'. Not sure if theres any truth to this?

Evidently. I just look at all the parking lots and think how different this city would look if even half of them were filled.

Take heart in the reality that a lot of them have been filled and more projects are coming to fill up some of the others.

As an aside, front and centre in this picture is the poor ole Winnipeg Hotel. Any word on if they've abandoned the restoration? I haven't seen any movement on site in months.

I recall them doing a lot of interior work, and they sand blasted the white paint off of the bricks on the front of the building. Maybe more is going on behind the scenes? Would love to see Sonder pick up a building or two and change them into hotels. We went to one in Montreal and Ottawa, and they're run pretty well. Good rates too.

Hmmm...other than the stucture at Donald and St. Mary (which you really cannot see the empty lot here), which lots in this image have been developed? And Neutroniks...it's not just how different ithe city would look, it's how different it would actually BE! The whole feel of downtown would be different. This should be a wake up call to our leaders at all levels to develop strategies to encourage the development of these lots.
