Quite an improvement over the previous proposal. I wish Rimap would have, or Claridge would, buy the Hampton Inn proposal next door.

Oh man, the Whiskey Bar. That takes me back...

Remember lighting the bar on fire? Those were the days.

Agreed, I like the new and improved podium with brown bricks. I like the grey bricks on the tower contrasting with the spandrel of the current hotel and that side mural would be lovely - bringing in some much needed colour and art to the Byward Market (I hope it won't be axed).

But yes, wonder how this would look like with that Hampton Inn proposal next door. Are we setting ourselves up for Claridge Plaza 3,4, Envie wall-to-wall fiasco again?

Makes me wish they would redo the facade of first two floors of their current building to be more like the addition's character. The dark tinted glass and metal panels that are there now look cold and characterless for a hotel.

Agreed. It's really quite bad at the moment.

Not sure if this was in the original design but I love that they're including a full-scale mural wall in the new addition. I do not think there are many high-rise (let alone) murals in Ottawa, but they've become quite popular in Toronto and Montreal. Great way to add a little interest to an overall unimpressive blank slate of a wall.

Agreed. Curious, I've seen lots in Montreal (and love the movies that they project onto building walls), but where are they in Toronto?

Thanks for posting what's coming up. It will be a big one. Not this project, but the agenda of the upcoming Planning Committee.

City committee OKs plan to expand Andaz Hotel with new 16-storey building

David Sali
November 16, 2023

A city committee has given Claridge Homes the green light to build a 16-storey addition to the Andaz Hotel in the ByWard Market.

The planning and housing committee Wednesday approved Claridge’s proposal to demolish a two-storey building at 110 York St., east of the existing hotel, and replace it with 106 new hotel suites. The 47,000-square-foot expansion will also include a ballroom.

The site plan calls for 26 parking spaces to be reserved for hotel guests in a new underground lot at nearby 141 George St. that will serve Claridge’s proposed 22-storey condo tower on that site.

The hotel addition recently got the go-ahead from the city’s built heritage committee, which also had to approve the proposal because it falls within the ByWard Market heritage conservation district.

City staff said the existing red-brick building at 110 York St., which was constructed in the early 1950s by the Union St. Joseph du Canada as office space, has “no heritage significance” and did not object to its demolition.

The Union St. Joseph du Canada headquarters next door at the corner of York and Dalhousie Streets was torn down in 2014 to make way for the Andaz Hotel.

The new addition is smaller than the one Claridge originally proposed in 2018. At the time, the developer said it wanted to construct a 19-storey structure with 136 suites and a 3,600-square-foot ballroom.

Claridge’s move to expand the Andaz comes amid a surge in new hotel construction in Ottawa as the tourism industry bounces back from the pandemic.

Three new Marriott-branded properties built by Montreal’s Rimap Hospitality – the AC Marriott on Rideau Street, the Moxy on York Street and the Marriott Renaissance on Slater Street – are expected to open downtown next year, and development applications were filed earlier this year for new hotel projects in Nepean and Orléans.

Ottawa Gatineau Hotel Association president Steve Ball told OBJ in August the new projects will help replace inventory that was lost during the pandemic.

While the local hotel industry’s recovery has been slower than in some other Canadian cities because of its reliance on government clientele that has been slow to return, Ball said occupancy rates were getting closer to pre-COVID levels.

I hope they stick with the colourful brick mural or whatnot on that blank side. It's really nice and adds a touch of colour and vibrancy.

The Market should be Ottawa's soul... colourful, artistic, fun and yet it's still just as conservative and sterile as the rest of the city.

I think we should have washed out red, black and grey precast panels in a random order.

There is no way this will end up looking anything near what it does in the renderings. Prepare for another pile of Andaz garbage.

No, that's Rimap's signature. Prepare for 35 floors of that on Slater Street.

If their project on LeBreton is any indication, maybe they've turned a page?

And the mural I assume is, well, a mural. As long as they hire an artist to do it, we should get something better than a blank wall, though it likely won't be what's depicted in the renderings.

Thankfully, it also looks like they'll have to submit samples of all the building materials for pre-approval as well. Was this ever a requirement for Claridge when they built Phase 1, or is this a result of Claridge's bait-&-switch? Because Phase 1 looks nothing like it did in the renderings and is a hideous eyesore on the Market.

An eyesore? How can Andaz be an eyesore when it has FOUR Tetris L pieces on it's facade?! It was a real trendsetter in that department. Wild and Wacky shapes in shades of grey are all the rage now.

Don't forget the one random dark square. That is what truly makes it a masterpiece.
