Yeah, they have had the semi permanent steel scaffold and netting for many years now.

I watched when they were putting up the cladding on 1451 Wellington, and the "brick" parts are actually pre-cast panels.

They could have the same thing to this complex and stuck closer to the original look (like what they did when the marble was falling off the First Canadian Place in Toronto). Something seems off to me, it must be that the new materials just don't match the 1970s massing and arrangement of the building forms. You can put the trendiest teenage fashion on a senior citizen, even if it's the correct size it just won't look appropriate.

There are many gutted floors now, it seems they are working through the night to empty the complex out.

There are a bunch of windows going up the southern facade that are replaced with plywood now, I will get a pic soon.

The first tower crane is up, right where I marked. It's going to be pretty neat to see our second tallest become a new building, although it might be our third tallest by the time it's complete if the Renaissance Marriot is finished first.

I wager Renaissance will be substantially completed before these renos. This is Government you're talking about.

It's also a much more complex project.

Which one is more complex? Terrasses has been mostly gutted already, I suspect the precast will come off very rapidly, then it's just installing the new curtain walls. The Marriot is from scratch.

Well the project overall I'd wager was more complex at Terrasses. Building from scratch obviously involves every aspect of a building, but it's often more straightforward to build than retrofit, especially with Terrasses' issues.

(I do agree a lot of the complexity was self-imposed, it took forever for the project to take off and the last minute complete redesign was a bit strange)

I think we can change the status from 'Planning' to 'U/C'. Also, this short duplicate thread needs to be folded in or deleted.

Does anyone know what's going on with the abandoned hotel? It's still red brick in the reclad renders. I'm assuming it's privately owned.

The Crown Plaza is privately owned. It closed during the pandemic and never reopened.

I thought so. It just looks so different from modern concrete buildings.

Are they going to strip down every building like that? Yikes. Such a waste.

Yes, total replacement of the building envelope (and interior), all that is being kept is the concrete structure. Hardly a waste, it's quite the opposite. Renewing a failing building is far more eco-friendly than tearing it down and building a new one.

They could have put stucco or vinyl siding on top of the brick ...
