The main entrances to the former church have been boarded up, and some sort of excavation seems to have begun on this site.

I am temporarily living (not in Ottawa) right now in a building with a stacked parking system that has been operational for a few years so thought I would give my impressions. I wouldn't say it is a "nightmare" but it clearly a regular garage is preferable. If someone is ahead ahead of you with a bunch of stuff and kids you will need to wait for them to unload. Probably no worse than the time to drive to P5 but it does feel worse. I am in a building where most people don't drive to work but in this location you might get 3 or 4 people wanting to all leave at 8:15 and you might wait 10 minutes.

The system does go down and need maintenance maybe about as much as a regular elevator. On Sunday it was broken for an hour or two but this was right when I needed to go somewhere so instead I needed to take a taxi. If this happens at 6 pm Friday when you plan to drive to Montreal I would think it would be very frustrating.

Lastly it is expensive as it needs regular maintenance and there are a lot of expensive parts that need to be replaced.

We will be starting a weekly Thursday Marché St. Charles Market update to keep everyone in the loop and share this exciting journey with you!

Despite a bit of rain this week, we are still full steam ahead. The underpinning of the church foundation is well under way and shoring is nearing completion around the site perimeter.

We are also almost done hammering out all that rock under the 2 level puzzle parking garage area (a crazy cool feature)!

Interesting...the cafe could be a charming spot. Does anyone know what the church building itself will be used for? Will it be the indoor section of the cafe/restaurant?

I thought the condo amenities were to be in the church basement, with a restaurant and market in the old Sanctuary, but I'm not sure.

"This is a development project with the aim to reimagine the purpose of the church building and add density to its surrounding property. A significant challenge and a great opportunity for us in the design is the Heritage status of the building. Its three exterior walls and iconic bell tower are protected and cannot be altered. Working with such constraints required much more creativity. As a result, we proposed that the main church building be repurposed as a year-round, indoor food market and restaurant. In addition, the new design also includes spaces for an ice cream shop, a coffee shop and one or two small local retailers. The intent was to find new ways to continue St. Charles Market’s legacy as a hub for area residents while also attracting visitors from other neighbourhoods."

And you can bet your bottom dollar that the ice cream shop referred to here will be Sundae School, currently located a half-block away, and operated by the wife of Harley Finkelstein, COO of Shopify, and a major backer of the St. Charles Market redevelopment.

Ah! Hence the "Market" in St Charles Market! Thanks for the info. It would be nice to finally have a year round indoor farmers' market in this city!

Quite fitting!

Awesome project, all around. Nice to finally see a developer who can purchase a heritage building and respectfully integrate it into a modern development.

It helps when there are days when your net worth increases enough to pay for the whole project. Makes it easier not to sweat the small, but expensive, stuff.
