I can't believe that is the "small" Ikea sign. The one on the North side is more than twice this size!

So, who's going to brave the zoo tomorrow? I can't imagine the traffic and parking woes with all the hype they've built on the opening.

They really should consider building an overpass between Baxter Road and Queensview Drive in the long term, so that traffic from the westbound Queensway could just loop around Queensview and access the store from the back instead of clogging the Pinecrest interchange. The other furniture stores (Leon's, et al) on the other side of the Queensway would probably benefit from the traffic and it would create a "furniture district". It would also be an opportunity to locate a better Transitway/LRT stop in the future instead of in the middle of the freeway ramps.

The Saturday Citizen - November 15, 1959: Pinecrest Plaza... originally proposed to be on both sides of the Queensway with a pedestrian bridge over the highway

I was thinking something like this:

IKEA's large item warehouse used to be on Morrison Drive, and now that they've integrated everything into one site, there will be a crazy parade of mattress- and couch-laden vehicles (usually slow moving) going through one overloaded intersection at Iris and Pinecrest.

As someone that lives on Malone Cres (look just to the bottom right of Ikea) it's going to be interesting to see just how much more traffic's going to be in the neighbourhood.

Quick question as a first time poster: Why is this in suburb section and not City of Ottawa.. I've always been confused at what the limits are for which goes in which section, since this mall/my area was in the City of Ottawa pre-amalgamation, not City of Nepean.

We argue about this from time to time. I think that whoever set it up basically intended it to be inside greenbelt vs. outside greenbelt, which would put this in the wrong category...

Not sure if they are planning a station right there, but sure a ped-bridge from a possible station to the Ikea and Baxter and ultimately the Iris subvision and others stores would be good. It could be quite a walk from the current Pinecrest Station.

I agree they could use a Queensway Terrace Station there (for avoiding confusion, Queensway and Iris should be merged into one, named Iris) with a pedestrian bridge.

That would be pretty nice, beats having to walk down and cross the Queensway at Pinecrest although if you stay on the transitway you can get off at Iris station and transfer to another bus that goes up Iris and get off at the corner of Baxter/Iris.

Unfortunately, for transfer purposes, that's a bus that comes every half hour for most parts of the day - route 152.

sounds like an underwhelming opening - i guess if it was new to the area people might care

Ottawa IKEA opens to public

About 100 people lined up in front of Ottawa's brand new IKEA store as of 8:15 a.m., a smaller number than expected for the opening Wednesday.

The giant store, now the largest in Canada, is two storeys and just hundreds of metres from its smaller Pinecrest Mall location.

Some shoppers lined up overnight including David White, who set up shop as early as 1 p.m. Tuesday. White said waiting in a long line was on his bucket list.

A number of police officers were on hand to make sure all shoppers remained calm as IKEA staff held thundersticks to pump up shoppers.

Traffic in both the parking lot and along side streets has been running smoothly as the ribbon-cutting ceremony was set for 8:30 a.m. The doors were set to open for 9 a.m.

Electronic message boards were placed along the Queensway to warn of any traffic congestion.

IKEA had estimated more than 14-thousand people would visit the store on its first day.

As Kitchissippi illustrated I also believe that a pedestrian bridge/vehicle bridge would work great there. Especially a transit station to serve that area of both the Iris subdivisions and the ones in the Pinewood area (area north of Queensview). Sure the transit station could be right across from Pinecrest Mall... but I doubt many people are going to bus to IKEA and take their Billy bookcases home with them on the bus! But overall...good idea!

Is this not exactly what's been present in the transitway plans for this area? I believe the station was to be called queensview, and I recall seeing it included a pedestrian bridge.

If there is indeed a Queensview station in the plans, when this section gets converted to LRT, a vehicular bridge would make even more sense for collector buses that would loop around. A station at Pinecrest would be redundant and can be omitted, which is difficult to access on foot anyway, and there is no easy way to properly stage bus transfers in the middle of all the Queensway ramps. The distance between a Queensview station to Bayshore and Lincoln Fields is about equidistant.

I went into the new store yesterday, and it's huge. It's sort of the same difference from when we went from the old cramped airport to the new one. A lot of people were complaining of tired feet by the time they get to the cashier area, apparently at least 1.3 kms from the entrance and through their maze layout. I bought some kitchen cabinets that had not been in stock for months in the old store, and as I was loading my car I found out that the "kitchen expert" made an error in my order, so I had to head back to returns, then go though the maze again to order the right parts, pay for them and pick up. All in all I think I walked about 5 kilometres back and forth from the car and through the different parts of the store. I was too tired to assemble anything by the time I got home.

Wow. It's so distinct, it almost looks like an artist's rendering or something.

We need to use more bright colours like the Scandinavians... too much beige/grey/brown in our cities

Ideally, Ikea will purchase the naming and design rights for Queensview station.
