An estimated 25,000 people showed up in Downtown Halifax this evening for the torch relay, it was amazing:

Hey Mr X,

You should start a thread in the canada section so everyone can weigh in on the relay across Canada including videos such as the above. Maybe update it everyday.

From News 1130:

Quote:
Keeping the Olympic flame lit proving to be problematic
Bombardier says it would be too difficult to re-design the torches at this point
Reaon Ford VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) | Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 7:13 am

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The company that made the torches for the 2010 Torch relay is standing by its products, despite a few problems along the road to the Olympic Games.

The flame has actually gone out a dozen times during the run, thanks to cold, windy weather and during one stop in Nunavut, organizers couldn't get it lit at all. But Bombardier says there are no plans to re-design the torches, because more than half of them have been manufactured already and it would be a little tricky to change anything this far into the relay.

Olympic torch gets some help
It had problems staying lit, especially in the North
John Ackermann VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) | Tuesday, December 1st, 2009 8:11 am

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Olympic torch is getting a tweak. The flame has been snuffed out at least a dozen times since the Vancouver 2010 relay began.

Organizers and Bombardier, the makers of the torch, met last week to come up with a solution. From now on, the torches will be fitted with a small metal windscreen to shield the flame. More gas will also be pumped through them when conditions are blustery. If the torch still goes out, it will be re-lit with a back-up flame carried in a miner's lantern.
They've also done something similar with the mini community cauldrons.
There's a cylindrical shield on top now - after the inability / delay in lighting at the Legislature on the first day arrival in Victoria.

Somehow we missed this. Happened a couple of days ago in Guelph.

A 19 year old woman (and protester) tackled the torch bearer and has been charged with assault.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2009/12/28/ontario-torch-relay-fall.html

And for extra giggles, you can read the people on the CBC comments explain how the torch is somehow a Nazi symbol. You wish I was kidding.

^ yea, i heard about that...do they really think they'll accomplish something?

Unfortunately, this means that from now on interaction between the torchbearers and the crowd will be limited....thanks hippies!

As for the Nazi symbol, they should also remember that the Volkswagon was created by the Nazi's as well. Should we get rid of that too?

The relay may have been started by the Nazi's, but it has since been turned into something else.

The Flame itself has been around since ancient times, and was re-introduced in 1928.

I suppose, only the relay started in 1936. Sure does remind me of Hitler every time I see it, though! I mean, just look, THEY KEEP ONE HAND IN THE AIR!!!

SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

And no, that's not reaching way too far to try and find something negative with it.

Waving hello to someone also uses one hand in the air. Should we ban that too?

Thanks Bulliver. Global News had some footage tonight and reported that Penticton saw about 6,000 - 7,000 people turnout for the torch relay, the largest BC contingent so far. BTW, love the lake shots!

Beautiful pix of the Penticton torch relay.

Does anybody know what route the torch will take through downtown Vancouver? Is there a map showing how/where it will travel?

I would love to see the torch blazing a trail down Granville Street at night when the revellers are coming out of the pubs.

I also think it's important for the torch to pass through Main and Hastings to at least reach out to the disenfranchised. I still believe the Olympic cauldron should be there as well, but apparently VANOC disagrees.

For safety and security purposes, it's best that VANOC skip Main and Hastings...they'd be seen as some unwanted corporate alien invasion. It could potentially be violent.

Final 2 days - Torch run through Vancouver

Check the route here:

http://www.straight.com/article-284162/vancouver/olympic-torch-relay-route-and-schedule-vancouver

Looks like East Van is getting plenty of coverage.

I'm confused as to why it appears to end at 1:44pm right around BC Place. The opening ceremonies are at 6pm to what, 9? So the torch would be getting lit around 8:45 or so? What happens during those 7 mystery hours?

The torch goes in to hibernation and avoids the promises of the APC to disrupt the opening ceremonies by clogging roads like West Georgia, all the way up to BC Place security wall ?

Thus making security slower to get through for actual ticket holders.

I hope they have more security during the torch relay in Vancouver. Better have more than just 2 or 3 guys protecting the little woman as she runs with it.

It's going into the DTES? Isn't that a bit suicidal?

What'll probably really happen is that they'll have to reroute it as the APC will be blocking the primary route.

There's a 7 hour gap probably because they need buffer time if anything goes wrong...a road block by protesters could delay the flame for hours like in Toronto. As well, after noon hoards of people will begin arriving in Downtown for the Opening Ceremony (I'M ONE OF THEM ) .
