While in the area yeasterday, I noticed that they have what looks to be about 4 floors of the building up. Seems like they are getting it built pretty quickly now that construction has started.

As reported the Spec (both print and online edition)

Quote:
Peter Mercanti named 2010 Citizen of the Year

A man who has been described as the consummate host is Hamilton’s citizen of the year.

Peter Mercanti, who operates the popular Carmen’s Banquet Centre on the east Mountain, was presented Monday night with the 2010 Royal Bank Hamilton Distinguished Citizen of the Year award.

“I feel great,” said Mercanti. “I feel honoured, privileged to have this bestowed on me, but I share this honour with my brothers and my family … They were always there for me. It was great to be recognized.”

Mercanti, who opened Carmen’s in 1987 and now runs it with his two sons, P.J. and Joey, was nominated for the award along with Kathy Archer, who performs as Giggles the Clown, and community advocates Matt Jelly and Hoojung Jones.

The 61-year-old entrepreneur and father of three was presented with the prize at a gala organized by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce and attended by more than 300 people at Liuna Station.

The 2010 Hamilton Spectator Youth Volunteer of the Year is Michael Pratas of Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School. He was nominated along with 11 other students. Pratas volunteered at Welcome Inn, was a summer counsellor at Camp Kidaca and fundraised for the Mad4Maddie Kenya project.

Receiving the honour at Liuna was particularly touching for Mercanti because his family arrived there from Italy in 1955 when it was the CN train station.

“We came through this very building,” he said. “I have to thank the City of Hamilton for allowing me to live here and allowing me to be part of this.”

Mercanti is well-known for organizing celebrity fundraising galas at his banquet centre. Last November, he welcomed actor Al Pacino to his Stone Church Road East facility and raised $150,000 for two charities. In the past, his business has hosted Michael Douglas, Sophia Loren, Margaret Thatcher, Sarah Palin and former U.S. presidents George H. Bush and Bill Clinton. Up next could be George Clooney, Tom Hanks or Sylvester Stallone.

He has also volunteered in a number of positions and created an event with Hamilton police to feed needy families at Christmas.

Mercanti has previously received the 2001 Hamilton Mountain Citizen of the Year Award from the Mountain Rotary Club and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Tourism Hamilton.

Mercanti was one of four children born to Joseph and Yolanda Mercanti. He arrived in Hamilton with his family from the Abruzzi region of Italy when he was six. They settled in the North End.

He has credited his parents with giving him drive and a strong work ethic. He grew up watching his father work in a cousin’s auto body shop — now run by his brother, Sam — and his mother picking produce at local farms.

Mercanti worked in the body shop for a time, but liked the food business. He first worked as a buyer for a local meat company and then opened his own company. He went to work with his uncle Carmen after he opened Carmen’s bakery on Concession Street in 1979. That business grew into the banquet centre. The Mercanti family is presently building a $10-million, 52-room, five-storey hotel behind the facility. It will be known as C Hotel.

The online reservation isn't active yet, but according to the website, they will be opening the weekend of June 24th.

I can just imagine their brochure:

"With SPECTACULAR views of a former Dump and a busy highway. Bring earplugs!"

"Area Amenities: Bowling and Shooting Range for all your Manly needs. Pray at local Mosque just steps from your room. WARNING: No Sidewalks, must *drive* across the street"

"Enjoy Hamilton this summer at C-Carmen's Hotel! Disclaimer: Summer Heat increases Manure smell in area due to several local farms/garden centres. Ahhh.. Open a Window and Breath it In!"

"Don't Worry!!! We're Nowhere Near Downtown Hamilton"

You don't have to imagine the brochure, it's right here:

http://carmenshotel.com/pdfs/EBrochure.pdf

We all know how much you hate this development, maybe partly because of who is developing it, but mainly because it's on the mountain, but really, Hamilton is not the first city that has hotels developed in its periphery and in close proximity to highways and airports. In fact, it's quite common. No need to be bitter about it.

Not sure what you were getting at referring to its proximity to a mosque. Are you implying it is a bad thing for a hotel to be located steps away from a mosque, and if so, I would love to hear your reasoning as to why it is a bad thing.

I'll highlight the joke for those who didn't quite understand ... *rolls eyes*

"Pray at local Mosque just steps from your room. WARNING: No Sidewalks, must *drive* across the street"

Personal Disclaimer: Clearly I have nothing against different religions and was one who lobbied FOR an expanded Downtown Mosque.
Also, I grew up a short bike ride away from this banquet hall, so I am very familiar w/ the area.

Let me add one more Brochure Point:
"Located across the street of an abandoned Laboratory where hundreds of medical tests were given false results. Bio-Hazards still remain for the adventure-seeker in your group!"

Ok Ok another another:

"Stay in a room named after a Celebrity who has no clue what Carmen's or Hamilton even is!" HAHAHA
"Stay in the Al Pacino room and get free Lasagna on your pillow every morning!"

It's really not that close to the airport. Maybe Munro would be doing better if there were hotels near it?

It's a catch-22, there won't be demand for hotels without more passenger service.

"Just minutes away from Gourmet Restaurants... and World Class Entertainment".

Then they list Milestones, Kelsey's, Montana's, Tim Hortons, Booster Juice and Starbucks". Wow.... gourmet or what?

For entertainment they list the bowling alley and Silver City - now that's World Class. Of course they also include Hamilton Place and Copps Coliseum - which we all know are just "minutes away"... so close you could even walk there.

I can't view the site on my iphone, ipad, must be ALL done in 2004 Flash.

Why don't they just say minutes away from the Sheraton?

Doesn't the C have onsite f&b? I've never known a hotel to advertise other places to eat.

I think some of you are missing the point. It was built to service their banquet centre customers first and foremost. Anyone else who stays there is just gravy for them.

Drove by this evening coming off the Red Hill, could see the blue in the distance. Interesting, but in such a weird location in the middle of an industrial park!

The rear

The front (with what I assume is a partially complete pool)

And the main entrance

Sorry the quality isn't the greatest, but there was an HSR bus tailing me while I was trying to snap them.

I rode around the building this afternoon. There were numerous tradesmen working furiously both inside and out, definitely giving an impression of working toward an impending deadline. From what I saw they will be opening before the month is up.

It was just a glance but I think there was even furniture in the lobby.

New hotel opening soon $20 million investment by Carmen’s expected to boost business

http://www.hamiltonmountainnews.com/news/article/238788
By MARK NEWMAN, NEWS STAFF
Jul 06, 2011

It’s not open yet, but the Mountain’s newest hotel is already booked by wedding parties for some weekends in August and September.

“We’re pretty much there,” said Joe Mercanti, president of the new five-storey, $20-million Best Western C Hotel by Carmen’s that should be open for business in the next two or three weeks.

They’ve already begun to take bookings for dates after Aug. 12.
