The NIMBYs strike again...

About the out-of-scale excuse, urban density is expanding in Chicago. It's like people expect density to stay in the Loop and it can never go out of those boundaries, yet these same people still want growth. WHERE DO YOU THINK THE CITY IS GOING TO GROW! INTO THE LAKE!!! NO!!! It's growing outward, North, South, and West, so if you don't want density, which is a perfectly fine opinion, you just need to move elsewhere. Things change, and when growth comes knocking on your door step, you can't just hack it down forever, you have to accept it or it will pass you by, and then the growth you wanted is gone, and its a lose-lose situation - for everyone. Thank you for letting me rant; I just can't stand incompetence.

^^^I agree.....the city can and should have this style of density esp along major arteries ... Ashland....oh yeah that little country lane...so quaint......

My hope is that this type of building...15 - 25 stories becomes more prominant throughout the city as opposed to just along the lake.

East of Ashland running from North south to Roosevelt should be open game for building in this range

Can anybody provide me with the old, postmodern rendering for Medici Towers? I know I've seen it somewhere, and the Berzon site has a thumbnail.

Few things that I've heard...

-Possible that the Post Office redevelopment might butcher the structure. I'm against any major change to the facade.

-Athletic Association on LSD is in serious danger of demolition. I heard Fifield might have bought it. I'm against demolition.

-Several trailers have been delivered to the LR (now Related Midwest) property that is in Streeterville (vacant lot at Grand-Illinois and LSD). I have no idea what this is for, if it will be the sales center for Canyon Ranch or something totally un-related (pun unintended).

I thought the sales center for Canyon Ranch was going to be in the John Hancock Center? Have you heard anything about the proposal? Next to the CS, 680 N. Rush is my favorite proposal north of the river. I would hate for them to chop off some height, I think we need some tall glass in that area to offset all of the pre-cast shitboxes. Especially if it's round, it'll stand out more and hopefully contextualize the Chicago Spire if it gets built.

edit: I just wanted to add that in the Chicago diagram, 680 N. Rush is labelled as 71 E. Huron. I really like this project because it extends the JHC cluster further south. It's slightly taller than Olympia Center and it's 2 blocks south and 2 blocks west. It'll create a nice bridge between the TTC and the other stuff in River North. If all goes according to plan, the skyline will have three prominent "round" glassy buildings sort of in the center of the skyline. Trump, the CS (at least viewed from the lake), and Canyon Ranch/680 N. Rush. It gives some nice balance, and despite having a lot of similarities (blue glass, curves), all three are totally unique in their own way. It's too bad they ditched the hole at the top of Canyon Ranch, that would have been really cool.

Don't quote me on this, but I thought the building was going to be converted into a luxury hotel. I can't see this gem getting demolished.

If you haven't seen this picture yet, then you are going to be very angry. I posted it a while back and it is the old Chicago post office redevelopment.

^^^ perhaps that is the slaughter you heard about?

This is the website which that picture came off of:

Rux Currin from Mesirow Financial Real Estate and Dirk Lohan of Lohan Associates will discuss the new 1.1 million square foot office tower now under construction on the block bounded by Kinzie, Dearborn and Clark. The tower, designed by Dirk Lohan and A. Epstein & Sons, will be the new home of Jenner & Block and Mesirow Financial. In addition, the building will include retail, health club and dining facilities. Hear about the design and development process of this addition to the growing River North office market.

Good news about 353 N Clark - it will be LEED-Certified. Perhaps it's old news, but I saw that for the first time when going through the development's marketing materials at www.353nclark.com. I think we're now at a point when all major new office towers downtown will be certified. I hope this will also become much more common in new residential high-rises as well (I think we are actually in the beginning stages of this occurring)...

Ashland and Taylor tower planned
New West plans 20-story building, single-family homes

By HAYDN BUSH

Because the Campus Green development is part of the same Planned Urban Development as the New West parcels, Pattangi said the building's individual unit owners would have to vote in favor of the project before changes to the PUD can be made.

"This is out of scale with other buildings in our neighborhood," Allcroft said.
Forget it, it's toast!

are there any near west side forumers who can pipe in support of actual density along our major arterials?

Crap!

honte, do something!!

Seriously, this is a pretty cool building and it even appears to be in pretty good condition as well. It's got height and square footage right on the lakefront; why demolish? (unless they're gonna do something truly spectacular there instead, but why do I feel like we'll end up with another lakefront surface parking lot for decade to come?)

Again, wasn't there something in the Trib yesterday where they said the building would be renovated into a 4-star hotel?

This is one where I'm not terribly worried. SOAR is actually on-record wanting it to be saved, and LPCI is all over it. I like the building, but frankly, I think there are many other endangered buildings here that have a higher "architectural value" if one dares rate our classic building stock. Please don't get me wrong - tearing down would be a terrible thing and a stupid waste of a perfectly great building.

Didn't catch the bit in the Trib about the hotel conversion. I would guess, however, that's the Chicago Athletic Association club on Michigan people are talking about, not this one. Unless I'm totally off-base, this discussion pertains to the Jarvis Hunt-designed club on LSD that was owned until recently by Northwestern.

I just realized that the guy who is president of the Campus Green townhome association is a family friend. What a weird coincidence. I will have to try to convince him to support the project at the current height and hopefully get him tuned into this forum!

That maybe, but when have you known Fifield to do any building that's architecturally "decent"?

I just called Related Midwest about the trailers that have been deliverd to the Streeterville site, and I was told that was for "another" project. It looks like the Perkins & Will designed tower will be launched within the next few months also. I was also told that the Canyon Ranch sales center will probably be opening within the next several weeks. It will be located in the Hancock. They moved the 340 OtP sales center to LSE several months ago, so I'm guessing that they've been doing build out of a model unit of Canyon Ranch in the Hancock.
