It takes him ages to get to the point, but Babiak alludes to the same issue of Whyte turning into a chain strip, with the closing of Nokomis and opening of a bigger Roots across the street:

"Victim of its own success" is very apt indeed.

Yeah, there's not a lot of chains found on 83rd or 84th Ave.

Queen street was the same way. All the small stores were being forced to find cheaper locations. But it helped create a real vibrant Queen west and rejuvenate less desirable sections. So let it happen here.

This is the natural evolution of pedestrian-oriented commercial / retail districts.

EDMONTON - The Gap store at Edmonton City Centre West is closing.

The shop will close on Jan. 26, said Victoria Kirk, public relations manager for Gap Inc.

“The decision to close a store is always a difficult one,” Kirk said.

“A number of factors can impact the decision, including store location, store performance and number of stores in the market. We are constantly evaluating our store fleet to ensure we have the right stores in the right locations to best serve our customers.”

Aw damn, that's actually a really good Gap store. My sister and I shop at that one because it's never busy.

An area that I would love to see become kind of hip is 118 Ave in Cromdale. I'm always down there and see so much potential.

Retail giant coming to WEM

Combination of style, price makes name for Simons in Quebec

BY ALLISON LAMPERT, MONTREAL GAZETTE

Quebec clothing retailer La Maison Simons is venturing outside its home turf for the first time with plans to open a new store in Edmonton after years of talks with mall owners across the country, sources say.

At a time when traditional department stores are struggling with lack-lustre sales, the Quebec City-based chain is in growth mode, with the expected announcement next week of a new 100,000-square-foot Simons at the West Edmonton Mall.

What's more, president Peter Simons -- the fifth-generation family member to run the company -- is in talks with landlords in Vancouver and the greater Toronto area and has plans to open a department store at Cadillac Fairview Corp. Ltd.'s Galeries D'Anjou mall in Montreal's east end, industry sources say.

/\ This is a big gain for WEM, IMO. Simons is huge in MTL, and full of great stuff.

I wandered around a mad-busy Whyte Ave today.
The Le Chateau space looks like it's a temporary Gravity Pope outlet, I hope they relocate there full-time.
I really hope the Megatunes space is filled soon - something funky that's not a club.

^^^ That Gravity Pope Outlet was open before Christmas..its since closed... Whyte was busy today for sure... I dislike when lot of vacant stores dont shovel the snow and makes a huge mess.. for example where esso used to be is a huge MESS! the landlord or who ever owns it should be cleaning it!

I love their current space and would rather have something larger and new in there or subdivided space for 2 new fashion places.

I believe it is owned by Imperial Oil Limited.
