Bon Appétit staff set off fire alarms at new WTC

By Stephanie Smith
January 22, 2015

Quote:
Bon Appétit staffers apparently caused a ruckus at their new 1 WTC offices by burning sage in the skyscraper Thursday morning and setting off fire alarms.

The Condé Nast mag’s executive editor, Christine Muhlke, posted on Twitter: “Sage burning in the new WTC offices sets off fire alarms for an hour. #worth it.” (It isn’t the first time sage has been singed around the foodies: Slow Food pioneer Alice Waters introduced her pungent custom at a gathering at Bon App’s old test kitchen in November 2013, where perhaps the tradition was picked up.)

But perhaps not wanting to seem disrespectful of their new digs, a rep for the magazine declined to comment, while Editor-in-Chief Adam Rapoport said, “It didn’t happen.” Muhlke removed the tweet.

Either way, Condé Nast sources told us alarms are often blaring on all floors because the building’s conducting “regular fire drills.”

Bon Appétit moved into their new space this week, and we hear neighbors on the 36th floor, from Wired, arrive on Friday.

Most other Condé titles have made the move.

^While visiting the memorial, I wanted to make an offering of incense (a tradition in many faiths), but wasn't sure if site rules allowed it

Yea they would probably be paranoid and whatnot. Security is stringent anywhere around that site. Especially at the PATH station where they usually harass people with cameras. I would just ask the nearby NYPD and see what they say.

Security at the memorial museum also needs to learn a bit of patience- when I visited, I was wearing a layered outfit, wearing a belt pouch, and carrying a camera bag, and tote bag with a few essentials. Needless to say, it takes a little more time to get all that off than somebody who comes in wearing nothing but shorts and t-shirt, and carrying nothing but a little purse.

The guard I got was rather impatient with me, which really wasn't cool- he's gonna get a lot worse than me during the winter- people coming in with bulky winter dress, kids and all their assorted gear, people in voluminous religious dress, and so on.
I've been to other places in town with similar security and nobody ever rushed me like that.

Once all of those ugly construction lights are gone, these views will be even more spectacular after sundown.

What's this platform that extends out from One World Trade Center base?

I work in One WTC and see this maybe once a week. It looks like a little platform that extends out from the top of the building’s base on the North side. Does anyone know what it could be?

It's where the base's BMUs sit.

Sooner or later, they'll have to be more particular.
