Winnipeg currently has 2 large intermodal facilities, one with CN and one with CP. Centreport is in discussions with BN to build a third.
The fact that the Calgary area doesn't have a single intermodal facility at this point it makes is very long overdue.
This doesn't really alter much in terms of the role of Centreport. Winnipeg is still the major rail, truck and air cargo hub of western Canada and the development of Centreport will only expand its capacity.
As far as commitments being made to Centreport we could start off with the half billion dollar enhancement of the airport infractructure. A couple hundred million dollars commitment towards new road infrastructure linking Centreport within the city and enhancements to routes linking Centreport to both the US Interstate Highway System and the TransCanada.
The difference between Winnipeg the other "hubs" is Winnipeg not trying to build something new from scratch. Winnipeg IS already a major hub and is expanding its actual transportation capacity through very large infrastructure investments and the development of a large FTZ, as part of the massive Centreport to better serve international trade. From what I can tell, it is really not even close to what Regina or Edmonton are talking about building.
With that said I think it is great that Canada is finally getting its infrastructure up to par from coast to coast as a means of making international trade more efficient.
