There was supposed to be a stormwater liftstation out there too...I would be willing to bet that is what the big hole is dug for.

I would think that's what it is as it is similar size and depth to the one they put in at Harbor Landing.

A previous poster stated that this initiative is nothing more than a larger than normal grocery store. I would beg to differ.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worl...t-railway.html

Warren Buffett just purchased Burlington Northern - Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad which means that he is serious that rail is returning as the major mode of transport of the goods we use. These big hub centres will become more of the norm as rail will do the long haul and trucks will be used only for short hauls. As electric motors become more practical and powerful we will be able to reduce pollution even more.

I think we may soon regret all the RR right of ways we tore up the last 40 years.

You may have heard the news reports that the NDP opposition was alleging that OH&S was letting an Ontario contractor at Loblaw site operate a crane that had not been inspected in compliance with Sask requirements.

Apparently this morning someone from the Ontario company was interviewed on CBC radio and called Regina a backwoods village. I guess things are so wonderful out in Ontario he has to come out to the boonies to find work. Someone shoud point out to him that Saskatchewan's GDP per person far exceeded Ontario's last year.

The GTH now has a website, but there is not much there. You will find more about the GTH on this thread. It might be worth checking back as they will no doubt have more info in the future.

Canada Post has been moving their main downtown sorting/distributions facilities to areas near airports and transportation infastructure. This is happening in Vancouver and Winnipeg. I wouldn't be surprised if Canada Post moves to the GTH from Saskatchewan Drive. This would free up the main post office for redevelopment, perhaps in conjunction with the stadium development.

oh yeah. it's only a matter of time before canada post gets the hell out of dodge and leaves that outdated building. that whole stretch of sask drive from broad to albert is going to be prime land for upcoming hotels, restaurants, and retail..... as soon as they get the stadium built first, that is ....

Easy there, bud. Maybe he just didn't fully read the title. There are like 4 of these hubs going up across western Canada supposedly. So before you bite his head off, take the time to realize that people make mistakes.

It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out. CN is committed to a major new intermodal facility in Calgary. CP is committed to a major new intermodal facility at the GTH. Winnipeg is high on their Centreport project although I am not aware of what commitments they have.

Winnipeg currently has 2 large intermodal facilities, one with CN and one with CP. Centreport is in discussions with BN to build a third.

The fact that the Calgary area doesn't have a single intermodal facility at this point it makes is very long overdue.

This doesn't really alter much in terms of the role of Centreport. Winnipeg is still the major rail, truck and air cargo hub of western Canada and the development of Centreport will only expand its capacity.

As far as commitments being made to Centreport we could start off with the half billion dollar enhancement of the airport infractructure. A couple hundred million dollars commitment towards new road infrastructure linking Centreport within the city and enhancements to routes linking Centreport to both the US Interstate Highway System and the TransCanada.

The difference between Winnipeg the other "hubs" is Winnipeg not trying to build something new from scratch. Winnipeg IS already a major hub and is expanding its actual transportation capacity through very large infrastructure investments and the development of a large FTZ, as part of the massive Centreport to better serve international trade. From what I can tell, it is really not even close to what Regina or Edmonton are talking about building.

With that said I think it is great that Canada is finally getting its infrastructure up to par from coast to coast as a means of making international trade more efficient.

Are you sure? This article came out shortly after those BN rumours:

But the fact that BNSF is present at the other inland ports down the mid-continent corridor -- in Chicago, Kansas City and Fort Worth -- may make Winnipeg a potential future development site for it.

"It would be extremely premature to say were are in talks with them about building that," Gray said.

"What we are talking with them about is to let them know what we are developing in Winnipeg. We're reaching out to them to say, well, is there a way to be engaged in a more substantive way."

For instance BNSF does not have an intermodal facility here but, she said, it also probably does not carry enough freight in Winnipeg to warrant one, either.
