My prediction for the Jets is 93 points. They will earn one of the two wild card spots finishing 4th in the Central Division behind Dallas, Colorado and Minnesota. Probably a first round exit like last year.

As for the Stanley Cup FInals, I will go with my prediction from last year - Oilers vs Hurricanes with Oilers winning in 6.

A good effort by the Senators, but what a fun Habs/Leafs game.

Oilers looking rusty thus far.

Maybe 3.

Absolutely awful play overall. I've never seen such careless hockey in a home opener that was meant to set 'the tone'.

Good on Van for showing the world that they are far better than people give them credit for, but holy Christ this highlighted the balsa wood team play of the Oil.

It's only game one and maybe the best thing for our team, but one of the worst games I've watched in some time.

Looking forward to the rematch.

3 McClelland Islay Single malts aren't even dulling the brutality of this beating by the Canucks lol. Wholly shite. I didn't see this coming. 7-1 so far. 12 min left. A horrible game from the Oilers. And a very good game by the Canucks.

Now 8-1 lmao...Gong

I am too. Should get a better gage on how much/if the Canucks have improved. Canucks were fighting the flu, and some injuries. Soucey and Mikheyev and Bluegar should be back in the line-up. Gives a better chance in what will be a revenge game for the Oilers.

Go Blackhawks!

Wow, Connor Bedard gets quite the first week in the NHL.

Gets to start the season facing off against Sidney Crosby and then it's a game in Boston, a game in Montreal, a game in Toronto, and then a game in Colorado. Chicago doesn't play at home until the 21st when they play the Stanley Cup champion Vegas Knights. Throw in a game in Vancouver and he could check off his NHL bucket list pretty quick.

He looked good. The Blackhawks controlled play while he was on the ice, he had five shots and actually had 11 shots toward the net.
There was a graphic comparing Bedard's NHL goals (1) to Wayne Gretzky (894) during Wednesday's game.

I only saw a screenshot and not the full context of the segment so for all I know this could've been meant as a joke, but it is quite a lot of pressure to put on him in his first NHL game.

It is as likely as the Maple Leafs winning the Stanley Cup...

Certainly more likely than Edmonton making the playoffs.

Crap goaltending. 40-16 shots and you lose 4-3?

Nothing changes.

Apparently Matthews and Ovechkin are the only players since 1917 to start the season with back-to-back hattricks. At least he's earning his new contract so far.

Canucks are the top ream in Canada right now!

Are the Canucks that good, or are the Oilers that bad. The cliche response is to say a bit of both, but I will lean more towards giving the Canucks credit. Far less mistakes than last year, and while Edmonton dominated the 2nd period, the Canucks managed to defend the important areas while Edmonton had the puck in the O zone for most of the period. Vancouver really clamped down defensively in the 3rd and carried home the win.

Oilers have scored some pp goals over the last 2 games, but the PK looks miles better, and the power play, which was strong last year, looks even better this year, with a lot more movement. Only 2 games but the pp% is at 44.

Looks like all of Mikheyev, Bluegar, and Soucey will all be back for the next game against Philley and the rest of this 5 game road trip. A couple more wins would give us 6 out of a possible 10 points, which would be a huge improvement over the disastrous starts of the last few years.

Not loving what I am hearing from the coach. How are we at this point in our cycle and still 'not there'... 'we can learn from it'. Learn?

I guess I can appreciate his calm demeanour.

HomeInMyShoes' Canadian Team Power Rankings

1 - Vancouver: may be elevated because they have only played the worst team in hockey so far
2 - Toronto: technically tied with Vancouver, averaging 2 standings points per game, but they've given up a lot of goals
3 - Montreal: I would rank Ottawa ahead of Montreal, but the Canadians are putting standings points on the board at a higher rate
4 - Ottawa Senators: Ottawa's other metrics are better, but they need to convert that into standings points better. Still a solid start.
5 - Winnipeg: you need to average more than 1 point a game to make the playoffs
6 - Calgary: pretty much a push with Winnipeg at this point.
7 - Edmonton Oilers: close to the worst team in hockey in the four meaningful stats I've decided on, overall they are the worst and it isn't even close

Numbers don't lie. People use them to lie though.

My concern with the Leafs in the first two games is how heavily dependent they are on Matthews. They would not have won the game against Montreal without his hat trick, and they would have tied in regulation on Saturday without his second hat trick. We'll see how things play out but if gets injured at some point that could leave the Leafs highly vulnerable, given the number of goals they've been giving up.
