It's nice to scroll through these photos at this time of year and be reminded that Canada is warm and comfortable for a few months per year!

Kingston has a surprising lack of beaches despite being on Lake Ontario, but it seems to be due to the amount of limestone in the region. As far as I know, there's only one sandy beach within city limits, and that is at Grass Creek Park, about halfway between downtown and Gananoque. Other "beaches" are very rocky and while some people will go swimming there, but it's not my cup of tea. One good sandy beach close by is on Wolfe Island.

Killbear Provincial Park has some spectacular beaches with sand and smooth exposed granite. The water is almost always crystal clear.

My favourite beach is in Bennett, BC. Yes, it's covered in broken glass (from all the way back to the Klondike Gold Rush!), but the water is too cold to swim in anyway, so you can keep your boots and puffy jacket on no problem. It's got cool old abandoned buildings and crap all over the place and the scenery is incredible. Also, you can get to it by transit!

Why is this surprising? The beaches in Vancouver are actually very nice and they ARE swimmable. I don't understand why people think they aren't.

Oh I know Vancouvers beaches are awesome! I used to live there. But number ten in the world? There's a few powerhouses missing from that list. Not surprised it's best in Canada tho.

Wait. People take lists like that seriously? Isn't this how we ended up with "Canada's best neighborhood" being Inglewood in Calgary. Even forumers there were left scratching their ends. You can find these "best...lists" all over the Internet, they all oddly have wildly different results.

There aren't many cities on gigantic lakes, btw.

To be fair, Inglewood is my favourite neighbourhood in Calgary BY FAR.

Are they the holy grail of lists? Did you see some of the ridiculous "top 10..." lists they had on that site? They whip these things out so you click thru 10 different pages of advertising, that's it.

The list looks legit to me. Barcelona, Sydney, Honolulu, Cape Town, then somehow Vancouver gets thrown in there. Vancouver's great in the summertime, but I didn't think it was that great. Now we know.

Keep in mind this list is best beach CITIES, not best beaches.

Vancouver, whether you like Northern Pacific sand/water or not, has a plethora of beaches that are a major part of city life. Kits Beach, Second/Third beach in Stanley Park, English Bay, Sunset Beach, Spanish Banks, Jericho beach, Wreck Beach - all of these areas are packed in the summer months, 7 days a week. No matter where you are in the Vancouver, you're never more than 15 minutes away from a beach access.

As giallo just pointed out, Vancouver's beaches aren't anywhere near number ten in the world.

Vancouver ranks in the top ten for the overall package (the city) in the cities-that-have-beaches category.

Taking beaches into account probably hurts Vancouver more than it helps it compared to its competition.

Why are acknowledging that list still? Lists like that are notoriously bogus. I'll show you an example.

"Top" beaches in Canada...

Bluffers Beach in Toronto...not mentioned anywhere, granted it's underrated in Toronto also.
