I wonder if those spaces can be combined to form something contiguous which would be key for getting the small/medium format grocery like Trader Joe's or Aldi downtown.

If they can, there's enough square footage in total for something like this:

I have heard that the developer would like to combine as many of the five spaces as possible for a single user with the stature you have described. Don't know if they landed that tenant or not at this point.

I didn't quite capture it in this picture from last week, but I love how this building starts to swallow up the Westward Ho and make it just another part of the skyline.

Even 5 years (such as in these pictures: https://www.localguidesconnect.com/t...AZ/td-p/928948), Westward Ho still stood out like a sore thumb. It's had a good run, but I'm ready for our 1920s building stock to fade into the background.

Yes, I feel the same way about Westward Ho starting to look like it's more part of the city as Sol gets nearly topped out. And soon, the Ray (aka Vela) will improve that even more.

I know it won't happen anytime soon (if ever), but I wish the huge antenna on Westward, which has been unused for decades, would be removed. It's a massive eyesore IMO. It's not part of the original structure and I see no historical significance in keeping it.

Agreed. I wish this bad boy could have some LED lightning installed, would look awesome at night.

It's one of the few unique and recognizable buildings in our skyline.

I used to think the same thing many years ago - remove the antenna. But now it's historic, and kind of cool actually.

More than anything we need to switch out the olds at the Westward Ho into a brand new nice senior apartment complex somewhere, and get the building renovated for market rate apartments.

Then demolish the Circle K for a new residential building and this area will truly be awesome.

The olds LOL Anyways, speaking of the olds, I can't believe the City of Phoenix displaced all those existing residents of Deck Park Vista Apartments (SEC of 3rd St & Moreland) and that project STILL hasn't broken ground.

What's up with that anyways? Another failed RFP?

My family used to shop at Aldi's when I was a kid growing up in Chicagoland. I hated boxing up all the groceries. Now I'd love one in my area.

No idea on what the delay is. The last permit pulled was a water main usage permit from August of last year.

Now we're talking, it's too entrenched into the community now, I'd expect a lot of community backlash if a proposal came around to remove it.

Adding LEDs sounds like a great idea. Who can we get on it? HAHA. Something along the lines of this would be sweet. Suns Orange when they're in the playoffs, similar for D'Baks, Devils, and Cards... Will throw in GCU while we're at it.

ITA. Anything to keep our downtown from looking so dark at night like Gotham City.

Post from Suntec concrete: 601 N Central, a 29-story mixed-use development, has topped out, bringing this project one step closer to completion in Downtown Phoenix! With 63,706 cubic yards of concrete poured and 3,831 tons of rebar used, the Suntec team is very proud of this major milestone. The foundation work began in March of 2023 on this 747-unit tower at the corner of East Fillmore Street and Central Avenue. This build has almost 29,000 SF of retail space on the ground floor and a wide range of amenities including the largest multifamily pool in Phoenix! Thank you to Layton Construction, LG Group, bKL Architecture LLC, BARNOLI & SONS CONCRETE INC, and CalPortland for being strong partners on this exciting project!

I’m back in town and Sol Modern makes a huge impact in downtown Phoenix. It really adds needed density in the north/central part of downtown Phoenix. I’m really looking forward to Vela and hopefully the 1st and Pierce project down the line.
