The completion of Highway 11 prior to 69 had several factors to it.

-It is part of the primary trucking route across the country, so it has a higher proportion of truck traffic.
-There are multiple towns along its route (Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Huntsville, South River, etc. etc.) that had safety concerns regarding the volume of though traffic flowing through their towns.

-The region has a stronger voice in government due to its ability to choose MPPs that were active in government over the era it was constructed.

I agree with everything you wrote.

The sections of Hwy 69 near Parry Sound twinning definitely got going when Ernie Eves was a cabinet minister (Minister of Finance) and later Premier as he was MPP for the area. The twinning of sections of Hwy 69 from Sudbury going South got going when Rick Bartolucci was MPP for Sudbury and a cabinet minister. (Minister of Northern Development and Mines)

Data shows in 2019 the 401 had 450k vehicles using a stretch near the Toronto airport. Stats from other busy highways on the continent pale in comparison to the 401's traffic numbers.

I wonder if something like this happens often in the states, where there are E-W and N-S divided freeways.

I’ve always find it ironic to crack down on worst offenders when they’ve already mentioned unrealistic deadlines.

They do still have a lot of 2 lane highways, but it is true that the bulk of the long distance travel can be done on the interstates.

Certainly we need to do something about the unrealistic deadlines, but in the end, the buck stops with the driver when they choose to operate their vehicle in an unsafe manner.

Had an incident like this last week on my way back from Slave Lake in Alberta last week. I had to pull onto and slightly off the shoulder. If there was more snow that would have been an issue. Saw other pro-drivers making rude gestures at that driver. My wife commented that maybe we should get a dash cam.

Kicking Horse: I could be wrong, but I think this may be the most extensive use of viaducts on a Canadian highway in a rural area that I know of.

Gordie Howe Project team released a couple new vids.

Hwy 401 will end at this bridge in Windsor and connect to I-75 in Detroit.

A couple of cables have been installed, approaches being built and the main towers are nearly topped out
