There's a lot of things that crossing the border with is a huge PITA or possibly illegal.

If I were to move to Alberta or BC I'd be bringing my exotic houseplants and my sourdough starter and crossing the border twice with those is probably not possible.

I crossed into the US at SSM towing a U-Haul and the border guard didn’t bat an eye. When I crossed back into Canada at Lena MB the CBSA agent asked for my manifest and the stamp and the lock tag that showed that the trailer had not been opened while in the US. Lucky for me the guard was a local, knew my family and figured I was a standup guy!������

So yes you can haul all sorts of stuff through the states.

Is this too far fetched of an idea for Calgary long-term? My thinking is Metro Calgary becomes one large urban area within the outer highway eventually way down the road.

Looking at it, you could fit another 2 Calgarys in that circle.

Lol, that would in fact be ambitious. How many people would live there if it were in fact all swallowed up by suburban development? It would be one or two more I suspect.

These outer bypasses are always interesting to me, as the utility to trade and thru traffic is undeniable. However, see Houston for what happens when you continuously build new concentric highways (re: induced demand).

Though with this idea, I'd put money on Balzac developing elephantiasis and becoming more substantial than Okotoks!

How accommodating would the terrain be for such a ring-road, especially west of Calgary?

Who would drive on something like that? It's like the suggestions on this board in Southern Ontario to incorporate a proposed London ring road into some type of Highway 7 twinning. Like, who would go all the way to highway 7 to get around London?

Local travelers or through travelers where that route is quicker.
It is like asking who would use the 407, or the future Bradford Bypass.

There was once a proposal to re-route 7 south from around St. Marys to meet the proposed 402 along the north side of London. Of course, 402 ended up going to the south of the city, but if the 7 plan were resurrected, it could still be brought south and run along, say, Medway Road and then somehow connect to the 402 near Strathroy.

That would probably be more useful.

That's a significant improvement. I still kind of wish they had chosen to tunnel through the mountain instead of having that deep rock cut, but it's an impressive piece of infrastructure nevertheless.

It would be made up of existing roads. I use some of them when I want to bypass all of Calgary. Also makes for a more pleasant drive some days. The terrain is very forgiving.

Jumping pound is just a name on the map. some farms and ranches.

Balzac is just a commercial stop between Calgary and Aidrie can't real see much break anymore between the 2.

As ambitious as that would be Will not happen in the next 50 years. But a road like 22 and 22X is sort of a bypass now.

The section between Redwood Meadows and Millerville would be the toughest area to build out. Any further west and you are touching the mountains.

That would probably be more useful.

A ring road around the city would be good for overall driving ease. As the city grows, getting around will only get worse and worse.

While on the ski lift I could hear blasting going on in the valley. I'm assuming that they are going to blast out those high points that the old highway was on to marry it up with the new road?
