Too bad the area between the Marquam and Ross Island Bridges isn't ready yet.. The best place for a regional employer like this would be adjacent to the future light rail station there... I guess there's plenty of opportunities for development of that area later on. At least the rest of SoWa has a streetcar connection..

That area is for OHSU's Schnitzer campus. I don't think they would give it up to Vestas.

I think the new Vestas is highly likely to be in south waterfront although as I understand it the site has not been selected. Vestas seems to have mulitple sites in south waterfront and other site options throughout the city. The architect will assist them in evaluating sites.

As far as windmills on the building go - who knows? In a meeting with Vestas where this was discussed, they didn't resonate well with the ideas of windmills on the building. Vestas is involved with GIANT windmills and the tiny windmills that go on buildings are made by their competition and are virtual toys in their wind world.

who knows where this building will end up within the city, but we can definitely say it will be a very ecofriendly building, which is welcome anywhere in this city.

And figure it will be between 19-25 stories tall, so it will fit in to just about any part of the city (highrise areas speaking).

The representative from the PDC that spoke last night at the neighborhood meeting said "Vestas will build their new headquarters in the South Waterfront".

Mirabella could turn out to be the best looking in SoWa so far. Itis in Seattle was thinking outside the box...there is some hope maybe?

Here's a good map of SOWA from Williams & Dame, that Mark had posted some time ago. A little outdated, as "3720" and "Alexan" are named, but it's an excellent way to zoom right into where you would put Vestas Americas HQ, if you were calling the shots!

There are superblocks just north and south of 33, but right across from the park would have to be a prime location, suitable for their goal, I would think.

How quickly do you all think it will be before they release a rendering of this thing? Don't they want to move in by the end of 2010? If that is true then they must be breaking ground by this spring or summer right?

well seeing the light work loads firms have right now, I could see them dedicating a large number of manpower to this project to fast track an approval by June with construction beginning by August, provided there are no complications with getting a site or the designs of the building. But with wanting this to be sustainable and the typical time frame for construction, I cant see this being done before the summer of 2011....and that would be fast tracking this project.

Maybe they wish to be leasing more space for a temporary location by 2010.

Brian Libby of Portland Architecture writes that a Vestas HQ site has not yet been chosen; only that it's likely to be somewhere in the "central city". But I agree with dkealoha that this will be built in SOWA, as it seems to be a good match. Hoping that ground-breaking will be much sooner than the END of this year!

SOWA is Central City. The Central City Plan covers SOWA, Lloyd Center, Goose Hollow, Pearl, Central Eastside and Old Town, as well as Downtown.

Other than Park Kitchen and maybe Powells the North Park blocks are very blah. Imagine tearing down the Post Office and building something that could capitalize on having this amenity so close by. Too bad the customs building won't become a iconic museum.

The funny part to me is I paid about $2/sq ft for a dump near a freeway in San Diego. I can't imagine paying that in Portland, unless it includes a personal chef and assistant.
