I guess it would be called protecting their market. Same thing happened with the Coronet Cinemas (and possibly the Cornwall Cinemas as well). Their owner had a stipulation that the space could not be used for any future motion picture theatre purposes. It really sucks. I liked the Superstore on Albert. Without a car, I now have to shop at $afeway on 13th Avenue.

Well to counter the doom and gloom about Regina's downtown. My daughter bought her first place which is a condo on Cornwall and 15th and I'm moving into one on McIntyre and 15th. There are some great deals to be had in that area. Underground heated parking, access to the parks, walking distance to work downtown, etc. Yes it would be nice for a grocery store in that area (I currently walk to Cathedral Safeway when the weather is not too bad).

REAL to announce Evraz Place name change Wednesday

“In a news release issued Tuesday afternoon, REAL says it plans to announce a name change that has been in the works for months.

Evraz, which operates multiple steel-production sites globally, including one in Regina, is one of the most well-known businesses in Saskatchewan with Russian ties.”

Interesting timing…

Fantastic.

The parking is key in this climate. And that's not a bad walk at all, as you say, if the weather isn't too bad.

It's not really downtown properly anyway. The majority of the population that does live downtown probably lives on Victoria or south of Victoria rather than north of it, making that 13th Avenue Safeway more proximate for grocery shopping than the old Superstore site.

Would be great to have a grocery store within the actual confines of downtown or anywhere between College and Saskatchewan and Albert and Broad. But if the market was ready for it, it would already be done or obviously in the works.

Welcome to the neighbourhood! I live in the highrise between the two of you.

People downtown make the best of what they have. Dollarama and Shoppers, in the Cornwall Centre have been increasing the grocery content in their stores to meet the needs of their customers.

There's a FreshCo in the Regent Park shopping centre which is basically the edge of North Central. It's a discount grocery store.

Strange question... Does anyone know why there are Commissionaires vehicles parked at both ends of the Armour Rd at the entrances to Evraz? They have been there 24hrs a day for the past week with someone in them and the lights flashing. I have never seen this before, just curious.

Most of the main facilities inside still have corporate names so I guess that's enough.

Makes sense to me. Easier for future corporate facility or event name changes…

Mosaic Stadium at the REAL District
Brandt Centre at the REAL District
Co-operators Centre at the REAL District
AffinityPlex at the REAL District
Queen City EX at the REAL District
McDonald’s Plaza at the REAL District
Dollarama Stadium at the REAL District

I like it better than Evraz! My only complaint is that 'district' sounds a bit cold. REAL Place would have been a better option (just imo).

I am sure they are keeping their powder dry. With the pandemic and few events going on, it was a terrible time to looking for a sponsor.

The biggest yacht in world was seized in Germany today. Roman Abramovitch, who I believe has the world's second biggest yacht, is the largest shareholder of Evraz. He is selling all his British holdings including selling Chelsea FC for 3 billion pounds. I wonder if Evraz NA will be sold or nationalized.

Can't be nationalized as it's based in Chicago and has more US operations than Canadian.

That is not true. The assets in Canada can be nationalized.

I expect this is a quick change to get Evraz off the main sign and the corporate sponsorship will come in a few months to rename it.

Evraz stock price in London is off 90% even though the steel industry is booming. Evraz in Regina is going full tilt on the steel side, although the pipe side is still weak due to government policy on pipelines.

Regina Downtown Grocery Store Ideas

Was thinking about this building and the fact that the interior already is open concept which would be easier to fill. 84 parking stalls and central location. I also really like the look of the building facade to begin with.
