Restoration of historic sculptures on Hamilton’s former federal building begins

http://www.thespec.com/news-story/67...ilding-begins/

The friezes — a band of architectural sculptures concrete depicting the history of Canada — are being restored on the old Federal Building façade on Main Street that is now part of a $150 million dollar condominium project.

The eight sculptures by the late renowned Hamilton artist Elizabeth Holbrook were saved from demolition after a series of appeals by organizations and people that included the National Gallery of Canada.

And now that the condominium project by developer Darko Vranich is near completion, Holbrook's protégé Christian Cardell Corbet has been brought in from New Brunswick to restore the 62-year-old friezes on either side of the building's entrance at 150 Main St. W.

Corbet was introduced to local media on Thursday in front of the friezes, to inform the public the restoration is underway.

Windows going in on the ground floor unit of 150MW. Still no official word on a tenant. Some of the lower units in Regency Tower look almost finished, with drywall and light fixtures installed and running.

Some colour on Regency that complements 150 Main W would have gone a long way.

So people from regency called me and said they had "recently" aquired 150 main and are also renting those units out as well as regency. Of course its the same developer/owner for both buildings and the hilton too.

So it looks like they couldnt sell all the condo units in 150 main and are looking to rent them out.

Any good sized city should always have at least one crane up building something at all times. They just add so much to the city.

I noticed yesterday that the curb lane in front of the building is open once again, after how long? Two+ years.

Yeah, the base of that adjoining building should have been finished in red brick - very drab. It's too bad we're so afraid of colour - I mean, is there anything worse than grey?
