The friezes — a band of architectural sculptures concrete depicting the history of Canada — are being restored on the old Federal Building façade on Main Street that is now part of a $150 million dollar condominium project.
The eight sculptures by the late renowned Hamilton artist Elizabeth Holbrook were saved from demolition after a series of appeals by organizations and people that included the National Gallery of Canada.
And now that the condominium project by developer Darko Vranich is near completion, Holbrook's protégé Christian Cardell Corbet has been brought in from New Brunswick to restore the 62-year-old friezes on either side of the building's entrance at 150 Main St. W.
Corbet was introduced to local media on Thursday in front of the friezes, to inform the public the restoration is underway.
