^ That is what I was going to suggest as well. I suspect they will create an entrance on the already completed west side of the building and just partition a section of the first level off from the main lobby, it may extend out but likely will just be a pull in. The northwest corner of the building will probably be used for an indoor pool.

This is great news, I just hope the addition for the hotel will look cohesive to the rest of the tower otherwise it could turn into a major eyesore displayed next to the park and a light rail station.

I'd be shocked if that were the case. That portion of the building underneath would have to be extensively retrofitted to carry the loads of a pool. It can be done, but it's an incredibly expensive undertaking.

That and I'm sure that many people visiting will be from colder places...and they'd love to take advantage of our seemingly everlasting clear, blue days and take a nice swim outside in the warm (or hellishly hot for 3 months) sunshine.

Not if it's on the first level.

^Well the article says:

Quote:
The fund plans to invest an additional $30 million to $40 million in the $175 million building to build hotel rooms, construct a hotel entrance and create a pool deck.
Calling it a pool deck seems to imply some sort of elevation to me.

Really? Cause pool deck is pretty synonamous with any place where there is a pool.

There is also the parking lot to the rear of the building which could be easily fenced off and turned into a pool area.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deck_(building):

Quote:
In architecture, a deck is a flat surface capable of supporting weight, similar to a floor, but typically constructed outdoors, often elevated from the ground, and usually connected to a building.
It could be on the first floor, but that seems like it would be an odd choice to me.

The current plan is to have the pool outside and elevated a couple of levels on the east side of the building. The plan is to also turn the retail space on the east side of the building into hotel lobby and lobby bar. The existing lobby will be exclusively used by the office tenants. That still leaves about 2,500 SF of retail space on the corner of 1st and van buren.

we are saying he is wrong because Val already pulled a permit on the buildng saying the hotel entrance would be on the Central side (west.) This guy is saying it will be on the east side (no room) which is 1st St not Central.

though he may have just typed East and meant West, easy enough mistake to make.

He meant west...because at the end he said there will still be retail available on the corner of 1st and Van Buren, which is the east side of the building...the right side is on Central and Van Buren.

It sounds cool though and I think will have a nice look...plus I love that the entrance will be off Central, hopefully no setback.

Wow, shows how much development is going on right now that we have to spend a half page try to determine whether or not someone wrote or meant west vs east. LOL
