much needed, but not sure what I think of the proposed look of this building.

from FreePress
"A unique proposal aims to create transitional homes in West Broadway for women fleeing domestic violence and help them pursue education.

The University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corp. hopes to transform two lots to provide a 15-unit building for women and children who have experienced gender-based violence. To be eligible, the women involved must also be seeking ways to further their education."

It's not dull, thats for sure.

Hard to tell what the units are going to look like based on the windows. Last thing the community needs is another highly aestheticized building with crap livability like center village

I don't dispute the important social function of that building, but man... that looks like something my kid would make in Minecraft

Another nice proposal for 199 Marion. This floated around a couple of months ago, but is at the City now for rezoning. 6 Storey, 26 units

^ love that building and as someone who in that area often, love to see new density and construction coming! As long as they don't complain about music from Deen's on Fri & Sat. It can really get hoping there till 11pm on those nights!

And I LOVE the glazed staircase, huge peeve of mine is staying at a 2-3 story hotel and the staircase is covered up in unfinished concrete, no windows, etc.

I feel like a home for abused women and children should have a comfortable and elegant expression that quietly fits into its neighbourhood.

I agree. I have often observed that you can see architectural expressions of our increased collective laziness in stairways.

Buildings from before WWI often have nicely finished, centrally located, well lit stairwells where the expectation is that most people will walk up and down stairs. The legislature's stairwells are the classic examples of this.

Once you get to the 50s and 60s, the stairwells are still visible but they have been shunted off to the side, they are less prominent.

By the 80s, the stairs in most buildings are basically cinder blocked fire escapes. The expectation is that you will take the elevator.

In newer buildings from the last 20-odd years, stairs are coming out again to greater prominence. They are becoming brighter and more prominent again.

It’s sometimes tough to defend spending money on windows in places where people aren’t (fire stairs) when facing a budget cutting developer.

While avoiding boring is generally good, I was always under the impression that housing for people in desperate situations (like escaping abusive environments) was designed to intentionally blend into the community. This seems a bit over the top.

As for the build on Marion...looks great. The fact it is next to Deen's should add to its marketability!

A few modifications from the original renderings

Definitely some import building design lessons in this story.

A housing complex was built in St Norbert in 2020 with the stated goal of being barrier free. The complex only included weather protected parking for 8 vehicles, although that was effectively 7 as one spot was needed for the building manager. The complex has 37 residential units. All the protected spots are already assigned to medical accommodations and there is at least one more resident needing a spot.

I know there are at least a few posters here that are architects and design projects professionally. If you honestly want to see how this project is a complete failure to meet the needs to its planned occupants similar to how Centre Village was I encourage you to read the link to the CBC.

Functional design for intended use is a critical part of having a successful project as much as costs and winning awards might be important too.

winning awards is not important.

This is an unfortunate story, but there is no requirement for accessible parking (or any parking) to be indoors. She should probably be complaining that they don't maintain the outdoor parking adequately.

It's a pretty tough sell to claim not having indoor parking is a human rights viloation.

Yea it’s sad to hear that story because accessible parking is important, but comparing this to the centre village or to call this a human rights violation is a MASSIVE reach and disingenuous. It’s not like this building is close to getting shut down, or people shooting up meth in an alleyway throughout the complex.

I would suggest the management could do a a better job in clearing and salting the parking area. She was aware there were no indoor stalls available when signing the lease.

The article is over reach and does a disservice for the providers of this housing.

This trend of “gotcha” journalism in local media as of late is getting a little tiresome. The BS ripping of The Leaf’s 3 hour shutdown is another recent example. Point out one tiny nonsense negative and ignore the entire positive.
