University breaks ground on research center

SALT LAKE CITY -- Jobs now and in the future: That's one of the driving forces behind a new research center at the University of Utah.
The university is building a 200,000 square foot facility, a project that will employ 900 workers. The hope is that, in the long run, many more jobs will be created by the research that will be done there.

I was in the Rice Eccles Stadium tower yesterday and these photos really don't do the view justice! If any of you guys have been up there you realize just how big the view is, I really need a panoramic lens.

WHY is this building taking THREE YEARS to build!?? The KSL story said it will open in 2012.

R&D structures of this size and magnitude can take a little longer to build. Lab equipment is not cheap or an off the shelf item. Also, from experience, actual construction has been known to start some months after a groundbreaking ceremony since mobilization is not neccessarily a walk in the park.

None-the-less beautiful structure.

Even when I was a kid I used to come up to that Miami Green apartment house on 13th East and 5th South and wonder when it was built.

I was digging around through some old photos I'd taken and found a bunch that I took from Ensign Peak a while ago. I stitched them using some new software, resulting in this panoramic view. I'll have to hike back before too long and update it.

*** Photobucket seems to have shrunk it down or something. The original is much larger and clearer.

^^^ I use photbucket too and it definitely does shrink them. I think flickr might be better that way.

I don't know, I'm kind of wondering how that stone-look is going to feel in about 20 years. Generally, I'm a big stone fan, but I think this is a little too much. What do you guys think?

I was thinkin the same thing Delts, Im not sure what the rest of it looks like, but I think the stone work on that one side is just way too much. I like the overall shape of the building, but the stone is just a no.

The Charleston condo tower on the northwest corner of that intersection was built in 1950.

Yeah, that's a pretty terrible rendering, and it doesn't help that the hatch pattern on the stone repeats itself every 3 feet.\
The renderer must have been trying to portray what the building would look like during a quintuplet convention because each person appears about 5 times in the image.

They did manage to capture the typical valley haze in the background though.
