Tired of the heat?

Farmers' Almanac forecasts 'very, very cold' winter for Canada

Quote:
Canadians are being warned to brace for a winter that will be nasty, brutish and not at all short.
The Farmers’ Almanac has released its winter forecast, which editor Peter Geiger says is based on mathematical and astronomical formulas.
“What we’re saying for this particular winter is that it’s just basically going to be very, very cold,” Geiger told CTV News Channel on Tuesday.

The almanac’s projections call for cold weather in Atlantic Canada and Quebec, “biting cold” in Ontario and “teeth-chattering cold” across the Prairies. B.C. bucks the trend, with “typical winter temperatures” in the forecast.

Well, last winter was ridiculous, so I'm not surprised. I feel like a big cold bubble sits over the Eastern part of the country a lot in the past five or so years.

We really need to fill in Hudson's Bay.

30C with a humidex of 41 and mainly sunny! We had 2 different downpours this afternoon but because the dewpoint was 24C, it remained high 20's while pouring down.

This summer is really close to my utopic scenario in Canada. I don't remember raining and being below 20C those past 2 months. THAT'S how things should be in the summer and not consol yourself when your shivering in July/August by writing "at least we needed the rain". The consistency of warm days is really exceptional. Just non-stop heat with ZERO break.

Low of 22C (humidex of 31) this morning.

The warmspot was Vineland, ON at 33.0C.

The official low today in Port Weller, ON was 25.6C. A couple of other places were above 25C for a low.

EDIT: Went for a drive with the sunroof down!!! Boy such a gorgeous night... 26C (humidex of 34) at 11PM. You pay hundreds of dollars to experience that in Florida or Mexico!

Considering that an el Nino may be forming, I'm thinking that it may be the opposite.

Why is it that some cities have weather records that go back to the 1800's (Regina, Calgary, etc.) but other only to about the 1930-1940 (Winnipeg, Toronto, etc.) This is what is stated on the EC website on each city's forecast page. I'm pretty confident Winnipeg has records going back to the 1870s-1880s.

Maybe some of the data was lost or not considered reliable.

It's really the time period of collection at the weather station, not the city or region. You wouldn't want to mix data collected at multiple locations. Sometimes new stations are set up or old ones are decommissioned. A lot of the airport ones aren't as old because the airports weren't developed until the 20th century.

Given climate change it might be misleading to calculate century-long averages or show extremes from 130 years ago that are much less likely to happen today. It's also weird to report 100 year extremes in some places and 30 year extremes in others. If you want an apples to apples comparison it's better to use the extremes in the sliding window, e.g. 1981-2010.

Ah living in BC. No parka and I've never experienced a temperature below minus twenty (polar vortex year) at home. And in Victoria its balmy in the winter compared to here.

^ Go on, it wasn't that bad today

Peaked at 25 (humidex 32) for a short while this afternoon before it clouded over and hovered around 22-23. A cold front is about to slice through though and we can say goodbye to summer until next week.

-20C is very effing cold so I'm not sure what you're going on about here? Sounds like you were trying to brag about that or something, lol.

And also, just looking at the statistics, Castlegar has a pretty cold winter, not much warmer than Toronto, Toronto actually has a warmer December, so if by parka you mean a winter coat I find it hard to believe you don't own one.

Ya -20 is freaking cold it's the coldest temp I've ever felt in my life at home. And it took the polar vortex to get there. Abnormal since I've been alive.
I've also experienced minus twenty in Toronto but it was windy so felt colder.
And minus twenty three in Calgary which was crazy to me.
Nothing to brag about it sucked.
Nope don't own a parka.
BC only province in the country to escape this years predicted bitter cold.
Let's keep an eye on overnight lows like my friend east of you does in the summer.

If this is something you brag about then I don't really know what to tell you. Southern Ontario/Quebec were forecasted to have a normal summer this spring... If anything you should be worried they have BC at above normal. That often means below avg temps.

I sense jealousy with that last sentance. After all, the Interior is trailing Southern Ontario/Montreal region for a second straight month.

So parka = winter coat?

I find it hard to believe you don't own a winter coat in that climate. Like I mentioned, your winter is quite similar to Toronto, Toronto has colder lows but not by a huge margin. Daytime temps are pretty much the same, Toronto has a warmer December all-around. So I mean that ain't exactly warm...

The -20C you felt in Toronto would be pretty damn rare also, especially if that were during the daytime. It would equally be a "polar vortex" event for that to happen.

-20 in Toronto would be for an hour or two around 4am, and doesn't happen every winter

Here's a good example of the warming effect of Lake Erie. Makes for a nice extended fall, but we pay for it with a cool spring.

31C with a humidex of 41 and a mix of sun and clouds! MASSIVE THUNDERSTORM this afternoon (93 km/h wind gust recorded at the airport). Despite all the rain, Trudeau airport is currently the warmest place in the country at 10PM EST with a temperature of 24.7C.

Low of 22C this morning (humidex of 30).

The warmspot was Sainte-Clotilde, QC at 33.3C. The humidex got up to 43 over there.

St Catharines, ON was the only station in the country to stay above 25C this morning (25.1C).

EDIT: If EC could get their heads out of their asses and update the mean temps for August that will be great. Most cities are still stuck at Aug 23rd with nothing updated after.

K-W is apparently headed for it's second hottest summer in the past 20 years. June and July were 1.5C warmer than normal and August was almost 3C above average!

Heat Warning still in place today, 30°C with a Humidex of 37°C.

The 5,000 passenger Anthem of the Seas is in Halifax today, currently 6th largest cruise ship in the world.
