Update from City Council on the Target location. Unless the developer requests a zoning change, the matter won't go before City Council. Currently the area for the proposed Target is zoned General Commercial, which is what the entire corridor just east of I-15 is zoned, from 2100 S to 200 S.

Council rep like my suggestions and was going to pass it on to planning and zoning. Unfortunately if the developer has already submitted the application there is no way to change the zoning at this point. It would simply be planning an zoning that is willing to give them higher densities or offer to rezone to mixed use to allow the developer to ad a housing component. If the developer wants to stick with the current plan then they simply have to meet the requirements currently set by the General Commercial Zone.

Like I said, the city is going to regret not rezoning that area. We saw it with 400 South, where suburban development became a staple in the 70s, 80s and 90s and we're seeing it now. Except something can be done before it gets out of hand, but it appears no one is willing to step up to the plate.

300 West has gone from industrial wasteland to suburban wasteland.

Actually, I read that the city planned on 3rd West for a commercial corridor. If you do some research, you'll see that that has been the citiy's intent for some time. That's why all the big-box stores are there. If they have to be somewhere, that's a good place for them. Anyway, it's close to my mansion.

I'm not attacking you personally. I just fail to see how this is something to look forward to. Target=the new K-Mart, IMHO. And I used to love K-Mart. Now it only sells Al Harrington's piece of crap shoes.

Just reporting the news. Seeing as SLC has been trying to get a Target into the city for over a decade now, I thought it was of significance. You don't have to like it, but I know personaly a few people in SLC who are excited about this latest development. As was previously mentioned, this will help SLC diversify its retail base and keep taxes in house.

It is not up to the Planning dept. to be "willing" to give higher density or to be willing to rezone to higher density. density is non-negotiable in the CG zone and only the City Council can change it. The applicant can apply if they want. As far as someone picking up the ball, it seems like there are always more priorities than bodies to do the work, so you plug along with the priority du jour and try to get it done before something else becomes a priority. Such is city govt.

As much as I hate it, there are some merits to placing big boxes and auto oriented uses in one spot. Further north, around target, you start to get into some real mixed use opportunities where you need to do more than what has been done south of 1300 S.

I think you missed my point entirely. The city did the exact same thing with 400 South back in the 1970s and today, it's a street most of us agree was terribly planned.

This goes beyond just putting a cluster of these shops on a street for the sake of it. That's the problem the city should have realized long ago. 300 West is a major street, especially for the western part of downtown and central city. Instead of just putting big box retailers there because no other location is suitable, the city could make it a more urban center for that region, which is lacking.

As mentioned before, Target has built urban stores in the past, so it isn't like the city would be asking them to do something they haven't done in other markets. But instead, we're pushing suburban development on 300 West instead of focusing on a walkable center with the luxuries of local businesses and big box retailers.

But this is why Salt Lake has so far to go before it can classify itself as a strong urban American city. The sprawl mentality is still too connected to development and it's something that will only continue with a government that enables this type of development. I mean, this region is only 1.5 or so miles outside the core and it's generally no different than anything 15 miles out of the core.

Odd Fellows Hall stands on stilts, across the street from its future home.
For a year now, an ambitious plan to move the historic building across Market Street and make room for a new federal courthouse has been stymied by complications. Now it appears to be picking up some steam.
"We're making progress," said Alan Rindlisbacher, marketing director for Layton Construction, the company orchestrating the move. "It's just been a complicated, complex process."
A March deadline for the move has passed, but Rindlisbacher said Layton has since renewed its deal with the hall's owner, the U.S. General Services Administration.
Until now, much of the preparation for the move has taken place behind the scenes, as Layton officials work with New York consultants, Texas engineers and an Oregon subcontractor to make the move a reality.
The stress from hoisting the building 11 feet off the ground and setting it on steel beams caused new cracks in the 117-year-old building, but it can still be moved safely, Rindlisbacher said.
And the project could see some movement by the end of the month, he said.
Workers will begin to replace and compact soil and put down steel plates to make sure the route can handle the 5-million pound load, Rindlisbacher said.
It's a "one-of-a-kind" move that won't be completed for another two to four months, he said.

I can buy everything I need from Albertson's on 2nd South (old habits die hard) and Smith's on 5th South. These seem more local to me than Twin Cities-based Target.

Kroger-owned, Ohio-based Smith's seems more local than Target??

Smith's may have been local once upon a time, but it hasn't been for over a decade since they first sold out to Fred Meyer and then Kroger purchased Fred Meyer.

So many things wouldn't exist in Downtown if the Jazz weren't in town. Gateway to name one, there is a good chance that CCC and 222 wouldn't be getting built and who knows how successful Trax would be, if we even had it or FrontRunner. We probably wouldn't have hosted the 2002 games either. We may or may not have a AAA baseball team, minor league hockey team and there is NO way we would have RSL.

Many forumers may not like the Jazz, but Larry Miller (RIP) building the DC in that part of town, has been a HUGE economic engine for the entire city.

It's going to be a short playoffs this year for the Spazz. Only going to host two games in Salt Lake.

I am too thrilled about the first link. It looks like one of those "town center" concepts. (A suburbs version of a downtown.) To me that dark brown ruins it. Though it is better than nothing.

I walked this block today, and came up with the idea of demolishing the children's theater for a through street, cutting up the block a bit so it can breath. I was surprised to find a neat little building which is on the National Register of Historic Places that I had never seen before. Would like to see it being put to good use. I also had fun imagining a lively district with ethnic shops. I've illustrated some of my ideas here:
