Besides, the more sports franchises we have in the valley, the lower ticket prices should be. $150 for a Jazz lower bowl ticket is a joke to me, even though that is a sort of consensus for any NBA lower bowl ticket.

For some reason There are 2 major projects underway that have gotten absolutely no acknowledgment thus far on any of the Utah threads as far as I can tell. One being the Primary Children's Medical Center emergency department expansion and the other being a new building on the Westminster campus. The PCMC add-on is 4 stories and the Westminster addition is 5 stories. Does anyone have renderings of either design?

westminstercollege.edu has renderings for the westminster science building. I attend school there, so when I get my camera back from my friend I'll have to snap some shots of it. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it the design. I like the design some days, but others days I just really wish they'd rebuild Ferry Hall. Westminster has some of my favorite SLC buildings i.e. Converse Hall (from the west side), and the Giovale Library.

A Salt Palace hotel? Propped up by tax dollars?

The Salt Lake County Council commissioned a study group Tuesday to decide whether its downtown convention center needs a 1,000-room hotel next door and whether public funds should help build it.

The 15-member panel will include government appointees and elected officials from state, county and city offices, plus representatives of the hospitality and tourism industries. That committee is expected to provide a preliminary report by late summer.

...The hotel notion, and a panel to study it, has the backing of Mayor Peter Corroon, who believes it could buoy overall economic development.

"We are doing well without [a hotel]," he said. "But we could do even better with one."

...About half the "master-plan projects," including a film center and Ballet West academy, are in Salt Lake City, which is deemed the county's "cultural core."

But the study envisions three suburban regional cultural centers, similar in size to Salt Lake City's Rose Wagner Center, four amphitheater upgrades, a renovation of Magna's historic Empress Theatre and a transformation of West Jordan's defunct sugar factory into an arts center.

I think it is interesting how the study shows that the Broadway needs of the county or being met. Well the fact that Wicked sold out in an hour is any indication, and the projected massive growth continuing in the valley show me that if the need is currently being met it won't be very very soon.

Not only did Wicked sell out so quickly, but it avoided coming to SLC altogether for several years because we didn't have a theatre large enough. So, Wicked hit cities with larger theatres for several years and then finally came here after it had exhausted those markets.

But you and Future mayor are totally right. I think Salt Lake should waste no time on the new theatre. Especially as these other artistic developments become realities. Salt Lake will boast an awesome artistic district that is rare for a city of its size. It would be more comparable to Chicago or Seattle. And that new hotel would fit right into this dream.
The rendering and location Urban boy posted is perfect. Can they just greenlight that? Save them a lot of time and work...

we would be building all of these projects if the cash was there, but it isn't. How much every property owner, business owner, etc. is willing to pay out of their projects for these things will determine whether any of them become reality or not.

SLC is in a real budget crisis heading into next year, so money will be spread very thin. Unless the County and State (who also have declining revenue) are willing to kick in a lot of money, don't expect either of these to be built soon. particularly when you consider other projects: the public safety facility, north temple viaduct (which is still not fully funded, and will be out of commission for 18 months), street cars, north temple improvements. Some of these projects are going to be left without any money.

You can count on there being some sort of property tax bond on the ballot in November for a number of these projects. Considering there are other voter approved property tax bonds (leonardo, soccer fields) out there that have not yet been added to tax rolls but likely will be on your November bill, I think these will have a really hard time passing.

I'd be happy with any hotel, but I'd really love it if they got rid of the Shiloh Inn. I don't care what they do to it.. anything would be better than what is there now.
