just got back from the causeway. i got a pretty good view from a field that was about 1/2 mile west of battleship park. it was very cool. the helicoptor with the first piece was in the air around 9:10 and took roughly 15 minutes to lower the piece. it looked like they had to lift it back off the building about 3 times to adjust its position. the second, final piece was airborne around 10:30. it took much less time--about 10 minutes. the area where i was standing had at least 100 people watching. i got a couple of digital shots and a whole roll of panoramic 35 mil.
Here are my pictures. We stood at Dauphin and Royal by the Van Antwerp Building. It was such a perfect day. Blue skies, cool breeze, and sunny. I saw hundreds of people where I was standing. It was just great to see so many people.

Great pics guys. I too, was among the many who made it downtown to witness something we don't see everyday. There were many folks with their cameras and videocams recording the wonderful site. I got some of the same shots and will add it to the progress pics I took since the tower began. The tower looks good and now I can't wait till the hotel and towers is open for business.
They showed two pictures. Both were closeups of the crown and spire with the helicopter lowering the top portion of the spire. They even said my name!
The show was like "CNN Live Saturday" and they showed it during the "headlines" portion. They mentioned it being 745 feet tall and the tallest in Alabama.
